Ever wonder about life as a developer? Trying to figure out how you can elevate your tech career to the next level? If so, there are some awesome events taking place this week that have you covered. Be sure to check them out! 
 

1. A Day In the Life of a Jr. Web Developer, April 14 at 6 p.m.

Considering a career as a web developer? Curious about what the day to day looks like for jr. level programmers? Join General Assembly for a panel discussion to learn about the various paths available to entry level developers — from freelance to in house, the skills companies look for in a hire, and discover resources to get you started, including our immersive and evening programs. Speakers on the panel are Ben Roesch, co-founder and delivery director, FlyoverWorks, and Sarah Holden, lead front-end developer, Kin HR. Beer and snacks will be provided.

2. Startup MVPs / How to Stop Starting and Start Doing, April 14 at 6 p.m.

This exciting workshop is for anyone with a business IDEA. You don’t need a finalized business plan, investor funding, or experience in startups to attend — just an idea that you're curious about launching. This workshop, taught by Lisa Henderson, a Hatch Valley Director, is designed teach you how to validate your idea by launching a Minimally Viable Product (MVP). 3. Fireside Chat with Director Lee of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, April 15 at 6:30 p.m.

Michelle K. Lee, the Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property, and Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, will appear at MATTER for an armchair conversation on current developments and topics in patent law and policy. Lee served as the first head of patents and patent strategy for Google before joining the USPTO, and was sworn in last month at SXSW as the first woman to head the U.S. patent system. As a principal advisor to President Obama on intellectual property matters, Lee will discuss current proposals for patent reform legislation pending or under consideration in Congress, and the recently announced USPTO enhanced Patent Quality Initiative.

4. How to Advance Your Career in Tech, April 16 at 5:30 p.m.

Join Built In Chicago and GrubHub for cocktails and an all-star lineup to learn how to get hired, grow and succeed in Chicago's growing tech community. Gain valuable insight and catch up with GrubHub’s c-suite across their technology, sales and business development divisions, moderated by Built In Chicago CEO Maria Katris. Discussion topics will include industry trends, advice for getting hired and advancing your career in tech. Product specialists, developers, engineers, marketing and sales professionals are all encouraged to attend and stay ahead of the curve. 5. The ACLTC Showcase, April 16 at 11 a.m.

ACLTC is a unique fifteen week, immersive code bootcamp that trains individuals to become effective web developers who are ready to add value to companies seeking to hire developer talent. While ACLTC utilizes Ruby, Rails, SQL, JavaScript, and AngularJS, the primary focus is on teaching the core paradigms of programming so that students are effective with any technology stack. At The Showcase, you'll get to personally network with each graduate and receive your own demonstration of each Capstone Project, individual projects built by each student throughout the last weeks of the course. 

6. ChicagoRuby: BLUE1647, April 17 at 6 p.m.

At ChicagoRuby: BLUE1647 we come together in an environment that fosters collaboration and creating. In keeping with that spirit we invite everyone to come meet new people, share ideas, learn new things, and build! Rebecca Miller-Webster, a software engineer and managing director of thougtbot’s Chicago Office, will be presenting. Let the group know what you’d like to take away from the meetings and what would be interesting to you.
