Get a taste of Chicago's tech scene with these 5 upcoming events

Every week, we bring you the city’s best tech events. This week, we have a workshop to teach male allies how they can support women in the tech workplace, a look into how tech is changing sports and a meet-and-greet with chess champion Anish Giri. You can also catch the Institute of Design open house or get into coding with a morning workshop. If that’s not enough for you, check out the full event lineup here.

Ally Skills Workshop, Aug. 15 at 6 p.m.

Most people agree that more diversity in the tech scene is needed for its growth to continue. But understanding that notion is only part of the battle. With this workshop, male allies can learn how to support women in their workplaces. Not only will attendees walk through the unique challenges women often face, but they will also learn how to advocate for more equitable treatment of female colleagues.

Institute of Design Open House, Aug. 16 at 5:30 p.m.

This open house hosted at IIT Institute of Design will showcase the school's latests projects, which range from domestic drones to VR environments. The evening will see the public debut of a range of inventive new tools brought to life, including a set of color-changing dice that help designers think of new color combinations and a project built on Microsoft’s HoloLens augmented reality system.

Wearable Tech & Sports in partnership with Rithmio, Aug. 16 at 6 p.m.

Technology has already brought a ton of change to the world of sports, but wearable tech in particular is set to change how games are played. At this evening meetup, people will get to hear talks from Rithmio, Catapult Sports and more, in addition to some neat demos of powerful sports-focused technology.

MATTER Workshop: Learn How to Code, Aug. 17 at 9 a.m.

This morning workshop will have you building a website before you have lunch. The coding classes are geared for those who have no experience, so this is a great place to get started in what could be a lucrative career or just a rewarding hobby. The class will cover the basics of HTML, CSS and Github.

Meet, Greet, & Play with Chess Grandmaster Anish Giri, Aug. 18 at 5:30 p.m.

There’s a reason some of the world’s smartest people play chess — it’s a mentally stimulating game that helps you think about problems in new ways while relying on a very simple set of rules. At this meet-and-greet, you’ll get to chat with grandmaster Anish Giri and even play a little bit against the champ.
