Tech roundup: Chicago companies raise $46M, Threadless scoops up Bucketfeet and more

Chicago tech companies raise $46 million

GTreasury, which builds software that helps large companies keep better track of their money, announced a $42 million funding round on Wednesday. GTreasury will use the funds to expand internationally, accelerate product development and build out its customer service department. [Built In Chicago]

Cognitive analytics startup NexLP has raised $3 million in a round led by Method Capital and joined by Dundee Venture Capital. NexLP will use the fresh funding to triple its headcount, which currently sits at 10 full-time employees. [Built In Chicago]

AMOpportunities, whose platform coordinates hospital rotations for international medical students and graduates, has secured $1.1 million in funding. The startup will use the funding to scale its customer acquisition efforts and platform. [Press release]

Chicago reveals potential Amazon HQ2 sites

This week, the city of Chicago revealed the 10 potential sites in its pitch for Amazon’s HQ2. The list includes two potential sites in the Loop as well as locations on the south and west sides of the city. Two suburban locations were also included: the former McDonald’s corporate headquarters in Oakbrook and Motorola Solutions’ former global headquarters in Schaumburg. [Chicago Inno]

Threadless acquires Bucketfeet

Threadless announced on Monday that it has acquired Bucketfeet. Both e-commerce companies make apparel featuring custom designs from artists, with Threadless specializing in t-shirts and Bucketfeet footwear. Bucketfeet will close its three brick-and-mortar stores, and its online operations will be integrated into the Threadless website. Terms of the deal were not announced. [The Chicago Tribune]

Peapod announces downtown Chicago HQ

Peapod is officially moving downtown. The online grocery shopping and delivery platform will move its headquarters from Skokie to the West Loop. Peapod did not specify how many of its employees, who currently work out of both its Skokie HQ and an office in the Loop, would make the move. [Crain’s]

Reverb.com’s office is officially cool

Reverb.com was the only tech company to make Crain’s 2017 list of the 15 Coolest Offices in Chicago. The company came in at number 13 and was lauded for the musical inspiration of its office’s decor and design. [Crain’s]

Groupon rolls out rewards points

This week, Groupon announced it will offer Groupon Plus customers frequent flyer miles and hotel reward points. Customers will be awarded three to five airline miles per dollar spent and six to 10 hotel points per dollar spent. Crain’s reports that customers can receive flyer miles from United and American and hotel points from IHG and La Quinta. [Crain’s]

Connie Capone is the new –– and first ever –– CFO of SpotHero. Capone joins the parking startup from Atlanta-based GeoDigital, a geospatial information management solutions provider, where she served as CFO and chief administration officer. [Press release]

Two Illinois universities announce major partnership

The University of Chicago and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are launching a partnership to promote technology research and development. The partnership will bring around 100 UIC faculty members, researchers and students to the University of Chicago’s Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in an effort to develop new technologies and launch startups.
