Over the last six months, I've had the opportunity to be a part of something truly amazing: Impact Engine. For those of you who don't know, Impact Engine is an accelerator program that supports for-profit businesses making the world a better place. We provide entrepreneurs with the resources and tools they need to build companies that address today's societal and environmental challenges. We're building up a community around impact entrepreneurs, and we're changing minds about what business can and should be.

At Impact Engine's Investor Day event two weeks ago, our managing director, Chuck Templeton, spoke about the "Rise of the Impact Entreprenuer." This type of entrepreneur firmly believes in the power of business and its role in changing society for the better. This is critical in a world that's facing serious obstaclesfrom climate change and declining education to poverty and poor public health.

Impact entrepreneurs build businesses that are not only socially and environmentally responsible and sustainable but financially responsible and sustainable. A fallacy exists that mission and profits are mutually exclusive. We're determined to change this mindset.

Governments and nonprofits alone cannot solve the challenges of the future. We need a strong community of smart entrepreneurs and investors to help us tackle the world's most pressing problems.

Whether you're a skeptic or a believer, we'd like to invite all of you to check out Impact Engine's Community Demo Day on January 8th from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at 1871. Because, after all, we can't do this on our own. Help us build up the impact community here in Chicago.
