Promet Source, a Drupal development and support firm, is welcoming more web development projects that center around migration. Migration is the process of moving data/information from a CMS or database into another. For Promet, that could mean moving content from an earlier form of Drupal to a current Drupal system, or from a legacy CMS to Drupal, and even from other non-CMS systems into Drupal. Content migration includes general site copy, articles, blogs, users, images, libraries, and more - all of which can be automatically transferred site to site.

Additionally, migration has a more important role in development and is a more challenging enterprise because of mobility. “To present a mobile website, data needs to be organized into very specific fields. For example, if you have a legacy article with an image buried inside, you need to break that data into an article with an associated image,” said Johnnie Fox, Promet Source CTO.

When a company decides to move, upgrade or merge their CMS, migration plays a pivotal role in the process; especially for companies who have significant investments in digital content (rich content typically comes with extensive imagery, html code, links and tags). Media and Publishing, Education and Government websites are examples of sites in which it is customary to have extensive amounts of complex data. In the case of Media & Publishing, content is the product; therefore, a healthy, well-planned and well-executed migration is required.

Promet Source has become experts in using the Migrate Module within Drupal in order to automate the migration process. Clients including Global Post, The Iowa Department of Education, REBAC and The Neurocritical Care Society have relied on Promet’s skill within Drupal and the Migrate Module as they advance their websites. In this area, Promet excels at organizing and mapping data into a hierarchy for seamless migration. In some cases (e.g. Global Post), Promet has accommodated for hundreds of thousands of records.

“For nearly every company, content is of high value. Using the Migrate Module is the best practice way of moving content and preparing it for a mobile first world,” said Johnnie Fox, Promet Source CTO. “Most projects require some level of data migration. But, it’s these data-heavy, content-rich migrations from legacy CMSes that require the advanced skill of my Promet team. It’s not just ‘hitting go’ on a module; it’s about structuring the data in a way so you can ‘press go’.”

With so much interest in Promet’s expertise and experience in Drupal migrations, Promet’s leadership team has chosen to present a webinar about the subject at large. “Many of these ‘juicy’ migration projects occur when an organization chooses to change their CMS. Our October webinar is a low-tech, approachable presentation for those about to embark on switching and migrating to Drupal,” said Maggie Graham, Marketing Manager at Promet Source. “We have money and time saving expert advice prepared. We’ll answer common questions including ‘How do I determine what I should transfer, upgrade or discard?’ and ‘How long will a migration take?’ Plus, we’ll help people understand where they should start and how to mitigate risk in a metamorphosis/migration to Drupal.” Those interested in attending the webinar on October 15th, 2014 can register here.

“The increase in migration projects signifies two things. One: More companies are committing to Drupal and its limitless functionality. And, two: The talent at Promet continues to prevail. This time proving to be a dream team of Drupal migration,” said Andrew Kucharski, President of Promet Source.
