I recently ran into a article that explained what the average American owned in his or her garage. However, the most intriguing thing about this study was the sum amount that a person owned in unused items. According to a 2011 study from research firm NPD, the average American has about $7,000 worth of unused stuff. I read that article and started thinking about the copious amount of unused items that I had in my garage. I went through all my unused items and quickly realized that I had a decent amount of items that could be sold in order make some quick cash. A garage sale would be the perfect opportunity.

So I proceeded with the plan to sell my items. However, I ran into a problem that I had never come across before since this would be my first time having a garage sale. How am I going to promote my items? I approached an experienced neighbor and asked what would be the most efficient way of having a garage sale and promoting it to the public. He responded by three words with no hesitation, "signs and Craigslist". I was satisfied with the answer, however, I am not one to do business on Craigslist since I have always been skeptical about posting my address on Craigslist. I never know who I am dealing with, nor did I want to create a post for each item that I am selling.

Grabio, a Chicago-based startup, is built on different principles than other marketplaces, it addresses the sellers and buyers equally. (Disclosure: I have recently decided to join the Grabio team)

A Location Based Marketplace

The mobile app is a classifieds marketplace for goods and services alike. Having the ability to buy/sell and know exactly where the posting is located without having to search the address on your smart phone or online is brilliant. Grabio differs from the rest because it has profiles and a ratings system built directly into the app. You’ll know exactly who you’re dealing with at all times, even before the transaction happens. Through the app, buyers can search for specific items in their area and can then see the items general location. Buyers are also able to make payments right within the app through PayPal which is great for high-monetary transactions.

Grabio is not only eBay and Craigslist in a single package, but also a social commerce network. It brings location awareness and safety to your neighborhood classifieds marketplace.

Doing Business Virtually

I was able to successfully share all my listed items on Facebook with all my close friends and neighbors via Grabio which tremendously helped getting the word out. However, I can say I learned one lesson from all this. Making a business deal isn't always simple, there is always a worry about getting scammed therefore using a platform that promotes transparency and trust is beneficial to all of us.

Going back to my first statement, I did not make $7000 but my excuse is that I am single.
