Does Chicago really need another 1871?

As Crain's tech blogger John Pletz reported last week, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is so impressed with the success of 1871, the incubator for tech startups at the Merchandise Mart, he'd like to do it again.

Mr. Emanuel threw out the expansion idea during a meeting earlier this month at City Hall with several female entrepreneurs based at 1871.

He offered few details, except that it would focus on a different industry.

Crain's asked some observers of the local entrepreneurial scene to riff on Mr. Emanuel's notion. Which sectors would be well-served by an 1871-style incubator? What should it look like? Is there even a need?

Saya Hillman, Len Kendall, Raman Chadha, George Deeb and other share their perspectives.
