Hiring vs. Cultivating Talent

You have an open managerial position.  Is it better to hire within the human resources you already have or should you look outside your organization for new talent?  Consider these points to determine the right way for you to find your next star employee.

Cultural fit
One important aspect of a new hire is whether or not they are a good cultural fit.  When hiring within, you are dealing with a candidate that already knows the company culture and you, in turn, have a good indication of whether or not they are fitting into that culture.

Hire Talent
Know your company culture to know who will fit well.
Decide the key attributes of your star employees and find those same attributes in qualified candidates.  Allow your candidates to meet with team members and get feedback from those that will work with the candidate.

Cultivate Talent
Advantage – You’ve already witnessed how well they fit into your company culture.

Down time
Down time will depend largely on how prepared you are when you do not need candidates.  Do you keep an active database of potential employees and their resumes on hand?  Does your company participate in succession planning and identify and train future managers long before you need them?  If you’ve had candidates pegged in advance, the interview process may also prove shorter.

Hire Talent
Keep job descriptions updated.  When positions are available, the job description is ready.
Keep a database of resumes and candidates on hand at all times.  Know what talent is out there before you need them.

Cultivate Talent
Advantage – Assuming you have a good feel for the pulse of your workforce and have been cultivating them for future managerial positions, time may be a minimal concern when hiring from within.
