Legal Tech in 2016

The legal community is beginning to catch up with the tech advances that are fast transforming other sectors -- and the pace will only step up as 2016 advances.

In this piece in a recent Law360 newsletter, legal tech experts Drew Stern and Scott Stuart take a look at some of the more interesting tech trends that will help change the legal game this year. One of them? The collision of machine learning and human productivity, with new solutions that will further up-end certain areas of the law practice -- legal discovery being a prime area.

As they write:

"2016 will see advances in how legal professionals achieve improved performance with technology as the assist. This may come with computer-assisted task prioritization and scheduling or with how and where lawyers work and spend their time. For example, our company uses machine learning technology to supervise our virtual reviewers simultaneously and at scale.

Such advances are important for far more than the gee-whiz factor. There’s an actual client benefit that’s created. Artificial Intelligence doesn’t merely transform what task is addressed, as in predictive coding, but how human counsel then addresses that task. The result is improved productivity and efficiency of the end-to-end process. In fact, we’ve seen cost savings from technology alone of 25 percent or more. And that’s an important benefit as clients put increasing pressure on their law firms for improved cost containment."

Stern and Stuart are co-founders and co-CEOs of Esquify (www.esquify.com), which achieves just what they're talking about here in a game-changing development for the document review aspect of legal discovery. Read the complete article (free trial subscription required) here:
