Ruby VS PHP VS .NET

I often get asked about the benefits and downsides to various technologies that are popular for web applications. In this post, I wanted to take a look at three of the most popular languages/frameworks, .NET, Ruby, and PHP, and share the pros and cons of working with each one.

For simplicity's sake, I have broken my analysis up into four broad categories: Open Source/Enterprise, Ease of Use, Community Culture, and Robustness.

Thanks for posting the comparison list. In terms of scaling, you don't find Ruby competes as well as .NET and php? I would debate that Ruby can be used far more than just prototyping. In regards to scaling, there are bigger concerns with architecture and how the project is implemented. There are many examples of different sites good and bad for all the above when it comes to scaling.

Thanks for the Feedback Ryan. I know this is a debatable subject :). I couldn't agree with you more that scalability is more so architecture and implementation driven. One of the issue, I found with Ruby is it doesnt scale automatically. But yes there are examples of websites done wrong with either technology.

Ryan Fischer

Everyone has their camps on this subject :). In regards to scaling automatically, how does PHP and .NET handle this?

Do you use recruiters?

I know this question seems a bit transparent but I'm extremely interested in whether the built in chicago community has had success working with recruiters -- direct-hire or staff augmentation/contract -- to meet talent or project needs.  If you're open to it, please offer feedback.  What was good/bad about your interaction?  Did the recruiter(s) you engaged get your business problem and/or budget constraints?  Where they timely with their response?

Thanks in advance!!!

Great interview over the weekend on WGN Radio with Bill Moller and Kevin Willer of the CEC where they discussed how 1871 is doing 2 months after launch and lots of other Chicago digital community topics. Worth a quick listen.
