Starting solo? Do yourself a favor – Think Again

When starting a business, you will have hundreds of decisions to make. Some will be very small – order business cards with rounded corners or square corners? Others will be bigger – do I build my app in PHP or Ruby on Rails? Perhaps the biggest decision of all will be who you surround yourself with during this journey. My advice – find a kick-ass co-founder. It’s what I did and I am so thankful I did.

Thanks, Cory!

Couldn't agree with you more. I've started 2 companies, one where I had a minority shareholder added about 2 years in, and my current company that I founded with a partner. I couldn't imagine not having my partner in the new venture. I think the key is finding someone who shares your work ethic and respect for communication. You'll disagree, but openness and respect for each others time and commitment is crucial.

Ryan Coon

Great comment, David! I can't believe I missed the similar work ethic requirement. I actually think this is one of the most important components of a good partnership.

Great article and great product. How about some advice on finding a co-founder?

Ryan Coon

Thanks, Peter! I'll add a post in the near future about tips for finding a kick-ass co-founder. Happy Thanksgiving!

Cofounderslab.com and founderdating.com are great online platforms for finding cofounders and then there is always old fashioned networking

event description

It is not too often that entrepreneurs get a chance to hear first hand accounts of the experience of taking a deep technology company from startup through successful exit from the CEO's themselves.  Here's your unique chance to hear from and talk with the CEO's of two hi-tech Chicago companies (AthenaSecurity acquired by $4B market cap company, Open Kernel Labs acquired by General Dynamics) and gain insight into the entrepreneurial journey of building, and exiting from, successful startups.

Are capitalism and doing good mutually exclusive?

We've all read the horror stories of capitalism gone bad and big business hurting the general citizenry. This panel will prove that a for-profit, humanistic business can do good!
