Associate Credit Analyst
The Group: Morningstar Credit Ratings, LLC is registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as a nationally recognized statistical rating organization (NRSRO). Morningstar Credit Ratings issues credit ratings on a variety of security types including commercial mortgage-backed and residential mortgage-backed securities. This Morningstar subsidiary aims to increase market transparency by providing the highest-quality ratings, securities research, monitoring services, operational risk assessments, data, and tools.
The Role: As an Associate Credit Analyst, you will perform fundamental analysis, contribute to research reports, support the credit rating process, and assist in maintaining our corporate bond ratings and strategy products. This position is based in our Chicago office.
Responsibilities
- Assist senior analyst(s) in fundamental research and analysis of corporate bond issuers across multiple industry sectors; demonstration of commitment and aptitude could lead to attaining primary coverage responsibility for specific credits.
- Contribute to company-specific and sector research reports that incorporate creative insights.
- Build and maintain individual models and spreadsheets on corporate credits to track quarterly results and update credit metrics. Utilize 10-Ks, 10-Qs, earnings reports and other data to derive financial data.
- Maintain and update information on individual credits including Morningstar’s economic moat rating and competing NRSRO ratings on a regular basis.
- Develop an understanding of Morningstar’s credit rating model; identify and track fundamental changes that might impact credit ratings.
- Provide back-up to an experienced analyst in monitoring news, new issues, or other material events impacting corporate credits or bond recommendations.
- Take on the lead role in processing and publishing daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports produced by the research team.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree is required, preferably with a focus on accounting or finance.
- Excellent writing, communication, and quantitative/analytical skills.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
- Detail-oriented self-starter with strong organization and time management skills.
- Creative thinker who is adept at taking an analytic approach to problem solving.
- Demonstrated interest in value-based research and investing.
- Working knowledge of the Bloomberg terminal and Bloomberg API is a plus.
