They should be affordable and easily accessible for everyone to use. Our top priority at RedShelf is to help transition the learning community from print to digital course materials and be advocates for students everywhere.

 

We are a fast-growing startup (400% year over year) based out of Boyce building in downtown Chicago. Our goal is to improve the higher education industry through digital textbooks by helping to reduce cost, increase access, and improve outcomes. What is this job?

We are looking for candidates who can fill a DevOps Engineer role. This position will primarily be focused on maintaining our systems in a High-Availability environment in line with DevOps philosophy and fully owning application from design to operations. This person will be designing, implementing, and maintain systems for deployment and infrastructure, ship code, as well as build, deploy, monitor, and troubleshoot as needed. Security threats is a concern for all businesses, RedShelf included. Therefore, the DevOps Engineer will be responsible for being vigilant and aware of new security threats; recommending/implementing new security technologies and policies.

 

RedShelf is in heavy growth mode, this means that monitoring resource utilization and capacity planning will certainly be something that occupies this person’s time. In addition, this individual will need to stay educated on tech trends: R&D of best software and hardware to help others be more productive and keep our applications at top performance. The DevOps Engineers will participate in agile planning processes for all work and advise developers on schema changes and optimizing performance. As you can see collaboration is part of our culture and important to our success.

 

What are we looking for?

What’s the most important thing for us? Someone who is passionate about technology and the higher education industry. Candidates should have about 3-5 years of experience in fast-moving and web-oriented development environment. Experience should mostly be within a DevOps/Site Reliability/Systems Engineer (Linux) based role. Also, having experience with AWS, Docker, SaltStack and Jenkins is an added plus. We run a Python house using PostgreSQL for the database, having experience in this tech stack will be vital to success. You should also have experience with Agile and/or Scrum development methodologies.

 

Possessing written and verbal communication skills and having the ability to effectively communicate with all stakeholder, including senior leadership, is essential for this position. We are looking for someone with a track record of balancing multiple priorities simultaneously with the ability to adapt to the changing business need.
