Cars.com is a seeking a general manager to oversee its Auto.com Web property. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a start-up-like group under the sponsorship of Cars.com, with its proven history of innovation and success. Auto.com operates as a separate site, running its own platform and content strategy to generate traffic and consumer activity in support of Cars.com’s advertising business. You can look forward to building a strong team identity, with a culture of creativity and commitment to success.

 

The ideal leader will bring business and technical acumen to the two-year-old Auto.com, as well as demonstrable expertise in search engine optimization and experience building successful Web sites. You will need to balance independent management with a thorough understanding of Cars.com’s business needs and continue a history of strong results.

 

The ideal candidate will be able to:

 

  • Oversee all operations of Auto.com, including Product Development, Technology, Finance and Marketing.
  • Develop business plans and budgets to support company-wide strategies, goals and policies.
  • Develop and maintain detailed and forward thinking Search Engine Optimization, Social Media Optimization and Multi-platform distribution plans that complement Cars.com.
  • Evaluate and monitor opportunities and threats within the industry.  Present possible product, technology and marketing initiatives to take advantage of opportunities and combat threats.
  • Monitor internal trends such as traffic metrics, website analytics, marketing strategies, technology effectiveness, etc.  Prioritize and champion key initiatives to capitalize on successes and aggressively address shortfalls. 
  • Hire, train and motivate teams to the highest level of performance.
  • Set and manage standards and performance goals for the Auto.com team.
  • Engage team members to ensure the group is constantly seeking opportunities to complement Cars.com and to share best practices with the rest of the Cars.com team.
  • Promote a culture that reflects the organization’s values, rewards productivity, enables flexibility and encourages exceptional performance. 
  • Report to the Senior Vice President Product.

Required Skills:

  • Proven ability to identify product, marketing and technology initiatives to drive online traffic and customer contacts.
  • Proven ability to release product.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively in an extremely fast-paced and frequently changing business and technical environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise a technology and product team.
  • Proficiency with online technology, multi-platform product development and online marketing, including SEO, paid search and social media optimization.
  • Decisiveness.
  • Must be able to thrive in an atmosphere of rapid change, experimentation and ambiguity

Required Experience:

  • College Degree or equivalent experience.
  • Leadership experience within a digital media-focused business.
  • A minimum of seven years of experience in business management, planning, and financial oversight.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in personnel management, including hiring, supervision, and evaluation.
  • A minimum of five years of experience performing product, technology and marketing with online brands.
