Who we are

We're building the future of retail, enabled through technology. Come talk to us if you’re interested in creating lightweight single-responsibility apps, building advanced Javascript MV*-powered front-ends, leveraging graph databases and machine learning, and creating amazing user experiences for users both internal and external. Our platform powers everything from the member experience (online and in-store) to our sales and relationship tools to our warehouse operations to our financial and merchandising capabilities - there is a lot going on!

We are polyglots, using the best tool for the problem at hand. You’ll see languages and technologies like Ruby, Sidekiq, ES6, React, Postgres with hstore and json, Sinatra, Redis, Swift, Android, Docker, Ansible, Neo4J, Python, Befunge, and Elastic Search.

We need developers and leaders that have a keen business sense and an entrepreneurial attitude. We work directly with the business to build solutions that solve real problems and need engineers that can thrive in an environment where you’re in the driver’s seat to create something amazing.

Who you are

There are three expectations we have of someone in a leadership role here at Trunk Club - we want you to be a technologist, a manager, and an inspirational leader.

As a technologist you should have a high-level understanding of what is possible through technology and be excited about the opportunities technology can bring to a business. You should be able to participate in high-level technical conversations, help break complex business needs down to technical capabilities, and help teams reach a technical consensus.

As a manager you should be able to help an organization operate to its fullest potential. You should be able to increase efficiency teams through communication, focus, process, and consistency - but not bring unnecessary bureaucracy or ceremony. You should be able to grow the people on these teams by providing them with personal and professional development goals and helping them achieve them!

As a leader you should put the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible. You should be able to inspire the team to go above and beyond, to fail forward, and to surprise everyone. You should be able to have a vision for where our platform can take this business - and push hard to get us there. You lead by doing and your enthusiasm is infectious.

Most importantly, you understand how to help an organization stay focused, happy, and productive. You’re a leader, but you still have solid coding chops and strive to use the best tool for the job. We welcome new ideas and technologies – you’ll be critical in deciding exactly what technologies we use. You’re comfortable working in and leading teams – and have done so in the past, understand and appreciate the value of test-driven development, and love to work in an agile and rapid environment.

Everyone on the Trunk Club tech team yearns to get their hands dirty in technical projects, even managers and directors, and you’re no exception.

How we work

We are a rapidly growing team of smart and passionate engineers. We like people who think independently and feel comfortable helping to drive the direction of the products they work on. We’re not tied to a particular technology or solution – that’s what you bring.

We pair

We frequently pair program. We work at pairing stations - two keyboards, two monitors, one mind. We work in an open team room; no cubicles or private offices. We believe software development is a collaborative process, where communication is key.

We work with agility

"Agile" means a lot of different things to different people these days, and quite frankly doesn't hold much weight at face value. We don’t believe in following a process for process’ sake. We ship frequently and focus on delivering incremental value – day by day, week by week, we make the company better.

Most importantly, we value our people

We spend time regularly working on whatever we’re interested in. We invest in our people by creating opportunities that combine our interests with what the company needs. We have lunch-and-learns, hack days, team outings, and encourage personal learning projects. Oh yeah, and we’ve got a forty-foot long bar.

  • You’ve got a ton of experience but are willing to continue to grow and learn on the job

  • You're a closer - not just a manager, a coordinator, or an idea person - but someone who loves to get stuff done, and done well (done means in production)
