Our teams at Grubhub are structured in a way that lets them move fast, experiment, and enjoy the work they’re doing.  We have small teams that are focused on different products but under an umbrella, that we call a “League”, that allows them to work together easily.  Our Director of Software Engineering will be the technical leader of one of our Leagues. An ideal candidate is someone that enjoys the hands-on work of a day-to-day developer (coding, architecture, design, and problem solving) while also leading the teams, communicating closely with our executives, major systems level architecting and designing, and determine the best use of new technologies, all while maintaining a development culture that Grubhub can be proud of.


Responsibilities

  • Create major system level architecture and designs

  • Create a culture that strives for highly-available systems

  • Be a leader in new DB technologies that achieve our availability and extensibility goals

  • Lead multiple teams that are focused on creating cutting-edge products

  • Liase with our senior executives and communicate product updates

  • Create APIs that we are proud to externalize to the world

  • Manage teams across geographic boundaries (Chicago and NYC)

  • Manage dependencies from other Leagues and Teams

  • Positively contribute to design and architectural discussions in other Leagues


Requirements

  • 10+ years of Software Development experience

  • 4+ years of managing engineering teams

  • Expertise in agile and TDD, Kanban is a plus

  • Experience in ecommerce or another high availability, scalable industry

  • Ability to establish relationships with all levels of employee, up to our CEO

  • Ability to lead, hire, and retain a cross-functional team of fabulous individuals
