As
the Newsroom Product Engineer you will maintain and enhance the content
systems that power our online presence, with a special focus on the
Chicago Tribune and its affiliated publications across the region. You
will be collaborating with the newsroom to provide cutting edge user
experiences that are used by millions of visitors every month, such
as ChicagoNow.com and TheMash.com. You'll be part of a larger cross
functional team that is defining the future evolution of digital media
nationwide.

As
the Newsroom Product Engineer you will maintain and enhance the content
systems that power our online presence, with a special focus on the

nationwide.
Things we are looking for:
- BA/BS degree in a technical field or equivalent practical experience.
- 3+ years development experience as a Software Engineer working on customer-facing systems
- PHP, preferably with a deep understanding of the WordPress core, as well as the concepts behind plugin and theme development.
- Python, preferably with experience using the Django framework.
- Experience in AWS,
particularly with EC2, RDS, Route 53, Cloudwatch, S3. We don't expect
you to have the knowledge of a systems administrator, but you should
know how to monitor EC2 and RDS instances, SSH into a server and
update/upgrade packages, and replace a server if the need arises. - Experience with Javascript, HTML and CSS, with an interest in user interface design. SASS and Backbone.js would be plusses.
- MySQL. It would be a real plus if you could help make our databases more efficient!
- You
should have experience with modern dev tools and processes, including
version control such as GIT, CI tools such as Jenkins and deployment
tools such as Fabric. - NGINX
and Varnish. All of our apps sit behind these technologies. The configs
are already written, but you should know enough that you can
troubleshoot or update when necessary. - Smarts, humility, creativity, and equal willingness to teach and learn.
