Instructure was founded to define, develop, and deploy superior, easy-to-use software. (And that’s what we did / do / will keep on doing.) We are dedicated to the fight against iffy, mothbally, shoddy software. We make better, more usable tools for teaching and learning (you know, stuff people will actually use). A better connected and more open edtech ecosystem. And more effective ways for everyone everywhere to access education, make discoveries, share knowledge, be inspired, and do big things. We accomplish all this by giving smart, creative, passionate people opportunities to create awesome. So here’s your opportunity.
The Software Security Architect is a director-level principal developer. You will be responsible for helping to secure a portfolio of large scale web applications developed using various modern technology stacks. You will also be instrumental in guiding our strategy and approach as we execute on a microservice platform vision.

As a security expert, you will be working with other principal engineers and leaders to shape and influence our technology choices, building software and mentoring other engineers.

25% travel to Salt Lake City office (one week per month) required.
What we do:
  • We build innovative web applications that rely on modern tools to create engaging user experiences.
  • We are cloud native. For this role, that means collaborating with all teams and leaders to craft low-latency, high-availability web services that meet the security needs of our international customer base.
  • We grow great products by investing in the teams that create them: the hallmarks of our engineering culture are constructive code review, a bias to action, thoughtful mentorship, and regular communication.
  • We develop technical leaders through the practices of agile software development, leadership & management training and active mentoring from leaders and peers. For this role, that means that you teach, train and mentor in secure software development practices.
What we are looking for:
  • A builder who can not only articulate a broad set of software security challenges and considerations but who can code up the solutions in whatever tech stack, language or architecture fits the problem.
  • A bold software engineer who can find vulnerabilities and risks within our architecture, code, our tools and our processes and bring the most important priorities to resolution.
  • A leader with demonstrated skill as a software security mentor — when was the last time you helped a developer grow with a thoughtful code review, trained a team on the OWASP Top 10 or partnered with product management to write security-related user stories?
  • An advisor with maturity and presence to handle vulnerability response & remediation as well as respond to RFPs and ensure that we deliver our security commitments.
  • A collaborator who proactively engages with product and program management, operations, legal, QA, and UI/UX to translate user and business security needs into superior experiences.
  • BS or greater in Computer Science preferred, but not required.
  • 8+ years as a developer and significant breadth and depth in software security practices, threat assessment and training.
  • Significant experience building a web application at scale.
  • A passion for people and for software.
