Quality Assurance Apprenticeship
Founded by the creator of the YOU DON'T KNOW JACK® game series, The Jellyvision Lab, Inc. creates virtual teachers, advisors, and salespeople who make online learning and decision making delightful. In all that we do, our goal is to make complex topics simple and boring material interesting, using a combination of great design, unexpectedly funny content, and serious technology.
Of all the virtual people Jellyvision has created, the tallest and least afraid of bears is ALEX® (www.meetalex.com). ALEX helps companies talk their employees through the tricky choices they’ll have to make, like picking a health insurance plan, deciding how much to put in the 401(k), or whether they might want extra life insurance. Our customers love ALEX because he helps their employees figure out what’s best for their personal situations, which, in turn, saves our customers a boat-load of time and money - everybody wins!
As we sell more and more of ALEX, we need more and more non-virtual (i.e., real life) people to keep the virtual ones amazing. That’s where you come in.
That’s lovely, but what’s this I hear about an apprenticeship program?
We’re looking for a select group of Quality Assurance apprentices for an extended apprenticeship program to learn about what we do and how we do it, and to contribute to success of Jellyvision’s revolutionary, award winning products. This is an opportunity to gain experience in a tech startup environment and experience full-cycle software development, up close.
Before we get into specifics, here’s the lowdown on the apprenticeship program in general:
Length: The apprenticeship will start in June and wrap up in November. Only apprentices who will be available for this entire period will be considered. Apprentices work full time, Monday through Friday.
Who’s eligible: Students graduating in May/June 2016 or recent grads.
What does this Jellyvision extended apprenticeship program offer?
- Competitive pay. Specifically, $600/week.
- The opportunity to learn by doing and contribute to Jellyvision’s award-winning interactive products.
- Networking and learning opportunities in Chicago’s vibrant tech scene.
- The chance to do work that matters. You won’t be making copies all day, stuck in a back room filing papers, or fetching coffee—apprentices are an integral part of our process and are valued members of the team.
- Mentoring and feedback from members of Jellyvision’s award-winning staff.
- Bottom line - the opportunity to do good work, with fun people, in a relaxed and casual environment.
Ok, I could come hang out with you Jellypeople. What exactly would I be doing as a QA Apprentice?
- Initially you’ll be testing our products while learning the production and QA process.
- You’ll work closely with the production engineering team to design, develop, and document new test frameworks.
- Improve upon any existing test frameworks
- Work with the QA Manager to develop test strategies for projects that entail data transactions and/or algorithms.
- Document all of the new or improved strategies and frameworks
And what skills do I need to be a QA apprentice?
- Attention to detail and strong organization skills – top priorities for working with the QA team.
- Self-sufficiency – We’ll train you about how our process works, and every day you will work alongside engineers and testers. You will have tasks and projects to work on, but are expected to manage your own schedule and speak up with your QA ideas.
- Tech savvy – Coding experience is not a pre-requisite for the apprenticeship (although it’s great if you’ve got some). What’s most important is that you’re comfortable with technology, and can pick up concepts and programs quickly and easily.
Sign me up—how do I apply?
If you’re interested in joining us as an apprentice, we need two things from you:
1. A cover letter that clearly indicates:
- Where you are in school
- When you plan to graduate
- What you think you could contribute to Jellyvision as a QA apprentice
- How your previous experience has prepared you for this type of gig
- Who you are. Really let your personality shine through your cover letter
2. A resume that fills us in on your experience to date – school projects and work that you’ve done on your own included.
That’s it! We will review applications as they come in and select candidates to interview on a rolling basis.
Thanks for your interest in Jellyvision, and good luck!
