JELLYVISION NEEDS AN ALEX MARKETING INTERN SPECIALIZING IN SOCIAL MEDIA

Founded by the creator of the YOU DON'T KNOW JACK® game series, The Jellyvision Lab, Inc. creates virtual teachers, advisors, and salespeople who make online learning and decision making delightful.  In all that we do, our goal is to make complex topics simple and boring material interesting, using a combination of great design, unexpectedly funny content, and serious technology. Of all the virtual people Jellyvision has created, the tallest and least afraid of bears is ALEX®, the virtual benefits counselor (www.meetalex.com). ALEX helps companies talk their employees through the tricky choices they’ll have to make, like picking a health insurance plan, deciding how much to put in the 401(k), or whether they might want extra life insurance. Our customers love ALEX because he helps their employees figure out what’s best for their personal situations, which, in turn, saves our customers a boat-load of time and money - everybody wins! As we sell more and more of ALEX, we need more and more non-virtual (i.e., real life) people to keep the product amazing. That’s where you come in.

THAT’S LOVELY… BUT WHAT’S THIS I HEAR ABOUT AN INTERNSHIP?

For Spring/Summer 2016, Jellyvision is looking for marketing interns to join the company and learn about what we do and how we do it. Before we get to the specifics about this particular social media internship, here’s the lowdown on the internship program in general:

  • Open to current students and recent grads.
  • Non-local interns will be responsible for their own travel and lodging necessary to be available in Chicago during the internship.
  • Interns will receive a stipend or hourly pay, depending on whether they participate in a full-time summer or part-time school year internship. (If you would prefer to receive credit for the internship along with compensation, let us know the name of the contact person at your school who can approve internships for credit and we will see if we can arrange a for-credit internship according to your school’s guidelines.)
  • School year internships will be flexible around your class schedule.

BEYOND THE STIPEND, WHAT DOES THE JELLYVISION INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OFFER STUDENTS?

  • The opportunity to contribute to Jellyvision’s award-winning interactive ALEX products through specific short-term assignments.  You’ll be doing work that matters.  You won’t be making copies all day, stuck in a back room filing papers, or fetching coffee — interns sit with and are valued members of the team.
  • An environment voted one of Chicago’s best workplaces for millennials by Crain’s Chicago Business in 2014 and 2015.
  • Training to understand the complex world of health care benefits and other communication issues employers face.
  • Professional development support, mentoring and feedback from members of Jellyvision’s award-winning staff.
  • Summer social events designed to give interns exposure to staff outside their core work area.
  • Networking and learning opportunities in Chicago’s vibrant tech scene.
  • Bottom line—the opportunity to do good work with fun people in a relaxed and casual environment.

OK, I COULD COME HANG OUT WITH YOU JELLYPEOPLE. WHAT ARE YOU SPECIFICALLY LOOKING FOR IN AN ALEX SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING INTERN?

We need a motivated intern with brilliant ideas to help brainstorm, develop and manage demand generation marketing programs for ALEX.  We have a quickly-growing team of internal folks and a small army of external partners who work together to tackle B2B marketing efforts and create our materials.  As both our team and our roster of marketing activities expand, we need someone ready to jump in and handle the coordination of ideas and projects to keep things running smoothly and to keep people interested in all the amazing content we produce. This involves:

  • Managing Our Social Community.  You’ll help gather the thought leaders and brand fans on social media and facilitate discussions. You’ll find the pain points of our target audience and address those with our various content offerings.
  • Leveraging Our Content. Thanks to our ALEX writing wizards, we have loads of fantastically helpful content around benefits, open enrollment, financial wellness, Halloween costume ideas, etc. You’ll help us leverage our content by putting it in front of the right eyeballs on social media.
  • Creating A Master Social Media Plan. This internship will culminate in a 500-page essay recommendation for our social strategy for 2016 and beyond. KIDDING! While you will be putting together the long-term social strategy, it won’t be 500 pages. It’ll be a month-by-month playbook that you’ll present to the team at the end of the summer.
  • Digital Marketing Dynamite.  You’ll work closely with the digital marketing manager to create engaging paid social media marketing campaigns, tinkering and testing until you get the messaging just right for the best lead generation results.
  • Industry Monitoring.  Your expert research skills will come in handy in this internship – you’ll learn everything you can about our industry and what’s going on in the market.  Then, you’ll come up with recommendations for what we can do better.
  • Team Communication and Coordination.  There’s a lot going on within our team, so you will help our project managers keep everyone aware of your research, the latest marketing activities, and deadlines.

TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS INTERNSHIP, WE THINK THESE SKILLS WOULD COME IN HANDY:

Attention to detail.  This is listed first on purpose.  Our team has many initiatives going on at once, and it’s important to know the ins and outs of each project to keep them on track.  Having a keen attention to detail will also help you identify opportunities and schedule timelines for new ideas and projects that fit into the mix.

Self-sufficiency. We’ll train you about how our process works, and every day you will work alongside writers, project managers and senior-level marketing team members.  You will have tasks and projects to work on, but you are in charge of managing your own schedule and speaking up about your wonderful marketing ideas.

Communication skills.  In our fast-paced environment, you need to make sure that the writers, the production team, the sales staff, external vendors and the rest of the marketing team are kept up to date in the most efficient manner possible.

Calm under pressure.  You won’t be doing air traffic control, but during the busy times it might feel like it.  We’re plenty nice to work with, but we’re plenty busy, too.  If you have a cool-headed, calming presence in times of stress, we’ll all be much happier.

Creative creature of habit.  Our messaging needs to make a splash online, so we need someone who is always on the creative crush. No idea will be too wacky for you!

WHAT OTHER CHARACTERISTICS SHOULD YOU HAVE?

  • Succinct writing skills.  We prefer complete sentences over text-message shorthand, and producing clear, concise written communication is a must.
  • Tech savvy.  You don’t need any formal training or coding experience, but you need to be comfortable learning how to use a variety of software programs.  Things like Excel, wikis, bug-tracking software, etc.
  • Be a team player. Please offer to lend a hand to whoever is the most swamped, as time permits.
  • Speak up! If you’ve got a fun idea for a marketing project, speak up and make it happen.
  • Grace in giving and receiving criticism and feedback.
  • Last but not least, while you don’t need to be a comedic genius, a sense of humor is required.

ANYTHING ELSE?
Yes.  We only hire nice, bright people who are willing to work hard.  Jellyvision is a group effort, and you must be capable of working collaboratively with writers, artists, editors, media producers, engineers, and project managers.  Everyone at Jellyvision shares a commitment to excellence and a desire to work in a comfortable, friendly atmosphere.  Please check out http://www.jellyvision.com to learn more.

OKAY, I'M INTERESTED.  HOW DO I SIGN UP?
Please send us:
1) Your resume.
2) thoughtful cover letter that outlines how aptitude and experience makes you right for this job, and from which we can get a sense of who you are. We weigh all cover letters heavily. In your letter, please note whether you’re interested in the spring or summer internship.
3) Links to your online social media presence and/or examples of business-related social media campaigns you have worked on previously.

That's it!  If you decide to apply, please know that every complete application will be carefully reviewed.  Seriously!  We know it is a time commitment to prepare an application. And we respect that effort by thoughtfully reviewing every complete application and responding one way or the other. But that kind of thoughtful review means that it sometimes takes us awhile to get back to applicants, so please NO PHONE CALLS. The time we spend responding to phone calls and emails inquiring about where we are in the process is time that we could be spending actually moving the process along – so please be patient with us!

Thanks for your interest in Jellyvision!

An Insider's view of Jellyvision

How would you describe the company’s work-life balance?

When the company culture from top-down is set to take accountability and pride in your work, when leadership trusts and empowers employees to do the right thing and gives them flexibility as Jellyvision does, it motivates employees to give their very best to the organization. Work-Life Balance is not just a buzzword at Jellyvision.

Rajal

Senior Product Management, Benefits Engagement

How do you collaborate with other teams in the company?

If I’m coordinating, I absolutely love ending a meeting by summarizing action items any teams are accountable for before everyone leaves. Especially with so much information to keep track of, it helps me to pinpoint the important bits. Making sure there is clarity all around is the best and most efficient way that I can collaborate with teams.

Ashleigh

Talent Sourcer

What makes someone successful on your team?

Our team scales across Jellyvision, with a mix of curiosity, humility, and helpfulness. We willingly lean in to support the products that help people protect their health and well-being. And while a wicked sense of humor is in no way a requirement, we’ve lucked out with truly interesting, funny folks.

Chrissy

SVP Product Marketing

What unique initiatives do you have that encourage innovation?

Implementation is a team of ballers, constantly impressing me with new ideas. Our most recent ideas are new classes around Professional Development and a pilot approach to quickly implement customers. These ideas came from folks on the team. When my coworkers have these ideas, my job is to give them the support and resources to run with them.

Alex

SVP of Customer Operations
