Software Engineer, Forensic Science Application
We are looking for an awesome software developer to join our Forensics team. Our main project is the development of a next generation three-dimensional imaging and analysis system for firearm forensics. In short, the system images the 3D marks left on a cartridge case (ie. shell) at micron resolution and then compares these marks to determine if two cartridge cases were fired through the same firearm. We’re not going to lie, we work on really cool stuff. Our research partners include local, state, and federal government crime labs. Yes, the big guys who wear suits and dark glasses.
Who We’re Looking For
We’re looking for an awesome programmer / software engineer with a bit of scientific computing experience who is interested in learning a lot more You'll join our small development group for our primary desktop application. We have a long to-do list and not enough hours in the day; thus we're looking to recruit another developer. You'll help design and implement new functionality to our three (related) desktop applications. These features include aspects of: user interfaces, scientific computing (some matrix math / image processing), 3D visualization (opengl), database interfaces, distributed (cloud) computing (we're building an AWS back-end for data access and search).
Responsibilities
You’ll be responsible for developing software around specific focused tasks. Your daily schedule will include working independently, meeting with collaborators, and utilizing opportunities for continued learning. In addition to the 3D imaging project you’ll also have the opportunity to work on other forensics applications (such as audio analysis or image enhancement). We’re a small startup and if desired you can get exposure to all aspects of starting a business. No regular travel is required but there will be opportunities should you be interested (research conferences and crime lab visits).
Skills and Qualifications
- You are a Computer Science or Electrical Engineering major (BA/BS/MA/MS/MEng) with interest and experience in Software Engineering and desktop application development.
- You have research or large-project experience in any area of Computer Science (undergraduate project experience counts!).
- You are an enthusiastic problem solver who is passionate about making the best software for applications that help improve society. You’re interested in working with an interdisciplinary Computer Science research team in an industry setting. You have a strong interest in learning and expanding your skill set.
- You have C++ programming experience. Our main application is a C++ QT Desktop Application (using eigen, boost, and opencv). Some development work may entail other languages or environments.
- (Optional) You have experience with or interest in 'cloud' computing (eg. AWS). We're adding a few AWS features to our applications. You could play an instrumental role in making this awesome!
