Position Description

The Sr. Big Data Engineer  will be technically involved with obtaining, understanding and moving big data sets through the Grainger’s Big Data Landscape. The Sr. Big Data Engineer  is responsible for moving large data sets from multiple sources and ingests this data into the Grainger’s big data environment and ultimately delivers ‘information sets’ to end users (Data Science). This includes hands on experience with the full Hadoop architecture including; Sqoop, HBase, Hive, Oozie, Flume and NiFi. The Sr. Big Data Engineer must also be able to create shell scripts and use UNIX commands as needed. The Sr. Big Data Engineer – must have hands on experience with open source code repositories like GitHub. Experience with SQL skills is a must.

 

The Sr. Big Data Engineer should have at least an understanding of a variety of hardware platforms including mainframes, distributed platforms, desktops, and mobile devices as well as a deep understanding of databases, data in storage and data in motion.

 

The Sr. Big Data Engineer must be familiar with big data cloud service offerings, how to setup cloud services and how to use them. The Big Data Specialist will spin up new services as needed for big data projects and decommission instances that are no longer needed.

 

The Sr. Big Data Engineer is responsible for managing the full project lifecycle experience of a Hadoop solution. This includes understanding the importance of requirements gathering, platform selection, technical design, data flow, ultimately project deployment of the proposed solution.


Position Requirements:

The ideal candidate would have 4-7 years of big data experience and 7-10 years of data ETL experience.

 

  • 7-10 yeas of Technical Business experience – ETL experience
  • 4-7   years of solid Hadoop experience – Sqoop, Pig, Hive…
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Science
  • Technical understanding of Teradata, SQL, Data Stage, Hadoop, Unix Scripting
  • Technical experience with big data visualization applications
  • To be able to clearly articulate pros and cons of various technologies and platform
  • To be able to benchmark systems, analyze system bottlenecks and propose solutions to eliminate them
  • Big Data Specialist Willingness to learn new data movement concepts
  • Build scalable, repeatable solutions for data ingestion
  • Be able to document use cases, solutions and recommendations
  • Be able to explain the work in plain language
  • To be able to help program and project managers in the design, planning and governance of implementing projects
  • To be able to perform detailed analysis of business problems and technical environments and use this in designing the solution
  • To be able to work creatively and analytically in a problem-solving environment;
  • To be a self-starter
  • To be able to work in teams, as a big data environment is developed in a team of employees with different disciplines
  • To be able to work in a fast-paced agile development environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Science
