Sr. Manager, Operations Research & Data Science
We work with awesome people every day. We don’t mean “awesome” like how other people use “awesome”—in some conjunctive form with “sauce” or “balls.” We really mean it. We work with some of the greatest people in the tech industry here at Grubhub. We’re looking for more.
Grubhub leads in the mobile food-ordering industry with a portfolio of brands that includes Grubhub, Seamless, MenuPages and Allmenus. We’re dedicated to connecting hungry diners with local restaurants. With offices in New York City, Chicago and London, Grubhub supports every order with 24/7 customer service.
We want you to enjoy where you work. Who you work with. What you work on. At Grubhub, you can order your cake and eat it too.
About the Opportunity:
Reporting to the SVP of Operations, the Sr. Manager, Operations Research & Data Science will be tasked with building a think tank of optimization, efficiency, and data experts. As our footprint in food delivery expands, we need a strong strategic and hands-on tactical leader who can develop algorithms to automatically optimize driver dispatch and routing.
Think of this as a start-up within a start-up! We are still making initial investments in developing our core models and reporting infrastructure in the context of a rapidly evolving business. This team will be challenged to build these models to simultaneously ensure unsurpassed diner, restaurant , and driver experiences, while safeguarding costs are held in line. It will also be heavily involved with complex data science (machine learning) problems, big data analysis, solving business issues, and next generation operations research innovation. You’ll work cross-functionally across the technology, product, operations, marketing, sales, and finance to ensure a holistic approach which considers all aspects of the business.
Some Challenges You’ll Tackle:
- Lead and grow a small team (3-5) of Operations Research and Data Scientists
- Develop operations research algorithms, using theories of optimization including linear programming, mixed-integer programming and network modeling, prototyping and simulating all variants.
- Determine and assess the right short and long term data infrastructure to evaluate effectiveness
- Support the develop optimization algorithms to deliver operational efficiencies and diner/restaurant satisfaction
- Monitor metrics and drive continuous improvement in measurement systems and dashboards while identifying forward-looking capabilities required to continue to drive next generation operations and delivery
- Proactively acquire knowledge about business processes and identify possible improvements by data/prediction – Stay on top of industry trends and always thinking “what’s next?”
- Iterate on predictive models from quick proof of concept to show value added and take to full production roll-out
- Partner and work closely with product and technology leadership to convert prototypes into production environments.
You Should Have:
- PHD in Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or a related field
- At-least 7 years industry experience with demonstrated business impact in Operations Research and Data Science through the application of the optimization models – 2-3 experience leading, teaching, and mentoring a team of other scientists and analysts
- Experience designing and implementing supply chain optimization models including network design and other characteristics of supply-chain (e.g., staff scheduling, vehicle routing, and facility location). Experience with leveraging such models to provide guidance for strategic and tactical business decision making
- Excellent data-related programming skills (e.g. SQL, R, Python, Mathamatica) and high-level modeling languages (e.g. AMPL, Mosel, R, Matlab).
- Superior data presentation and visualization skills (e.g. D3, Tableau, Arcadia, Angular etc.)
- Experience building automated analytical pipelines into production (from ETL job on data sources to visual/notification output for end users)
- Experience communicating with both technical and business people – having applied these skills in both academic teaching environment and a business setting is a plus
- Data driven decision making mentality and sound business judgment through strong analytical thinking
Got These? Even Better:
- Demonstrated experience designing/building forecasting systems and business metrics
- Experience applying forecasting and data mining techniques in an industrial setting
- Experience working for an online retailer and/or GIS mapping
- Participation in Kaggle.com competitions
- Experience building real-time or near-real-time (e.g. 1 min delay) analytics
- Experience applying distributed Machine Learning
- NLP pipeline experience (e.g. NTLK, WordNet, Word2Vec, Open NLP etc.)
And Of Course, Perks!:
- Unlimited paid vacation days. Choose how your time is spent.
- Never go hungry! We provide weekly GrubHub/Seamless credit.
- Regular in-office social events, including happy hours, wine tastings, karaoke, bingo with prizes and more.
