PEAK6 Investments is looking for a highly skilled and passionate PostgreSQL DBA to join our Infrastructure team.  In this fast-paced and dynamic role, you will partner with the development and product management teams to design and implement robust database solutions to ensure 100% availability of our applications.

 What you’ll do all day:

Architect and implement scalable databases. You will work closely with development teams to create reliable databases across multiple platforms like PostgreSQL, MSSQL, and MongoDB. Additionally, you will play a key role in optimizing schema to ensure data consistency and reliability, while acting as a lead in projects around petabyte scale data storage and analytics systems.

Proactively monitor and resolve production issues.  You will help find creative ways to resolve database issues like performance, optimizations, and database recovery. You will also help in database installation, capacity planning, and data migration across multiple data centers and database server architectures. Additionally, you will create tools to automate database tasks for better efficiency.

Implement high availability and disaster recovery solutions. You’ll find innovative ways to minimize database downtime for planned and unplanned outages.  You will be a swift emergency support responder to help produce reliable and effective solutions to database technical issues.  Additionally, you will participate in on-call rotation and other duties as needed.

Collaborate.  We love to collaborate, share ideas and get different perspectives.  You’ll work with smart people who value smart ideas and strong opinions.

Work in a fast-paced environment.  You’ll work tirelessly with your teammates to achieve timely deliverables and ensure reliable, scalable, and efficient database practices and standards.

We’re looking for someone who:

Is self-directed.  You’re driven, motivated, and eager to succeed.

Is a leader. You can lead multiple, high-visibility projects that require constant communication and collaboration with cross-functional teams and external parties.

Have strong technical skills. You love technology, always learning new database tools, practices, and standards.

Is adaptable. While you enjoy establishing process and standards, you understand the need to be flexible and enjoy trying new things.

Operates with integrity.  You always conduct yourself with honesty and operate ethically. You say what you mean, and mean what you say.

A few reasons why you might love us:

The team is great.   You’ll work cross-functionally with teams across the organizations that have a vested interest in maintaining strong database practices. You’ll be managed by people who care about you, and invest in your success.

Your success will be recognized and appreciated.   You’ll be able to see your direct impact on our growth. You won’t be just another cog in the wheel.

The work environment is amazing.   Our office space is really cool, open, and sleek. We provide free beverages, snacks and have fun while working hard.

And a few reasons why you may not love us:

You don’t like change.   This is not a job for someone who likes ‘predictable’.  Our new business initiative demands flexible thinking and working in a fast paced and adaptable environment.

You’re not the collaborative type.   We’re solving pretty heady challenges. We bring ideas to the table and we work together to solve these challenges. If you’re looking to hide out and do your own thing, this might not be the right spot.

The skills you’ll need to succeed:

Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related IT field (or equivalent).

Knowledge in managing PostgreSQL systems

5+ years of experience as a DBA with evidence of exceptional ability.

Experience with HA technologies including clustering database systems

Understanding and experience with Linux and Windows Operating Systems.

Extensive experience in automation with a DevOps mindset.

Expertise in setting up replication, backups, monitoring, Database tuning and SQL tuning.

Strong troubleshooting and proactive analytical skills to ensure minimum downtime of production databases.

Strong Shell, Perl, Python and SQL scripting to automate DB related jobs.

Proven ability to work independently or as an integral member of a team.

Excellent communication and documentation skills - ability to work with development teams.

Familiarity with monitoring tools such as Nagios, Idera, etc.

Experience with Mongo and MSSQL databases a plus

Experience with PowerShell a plus.
