We at RedShelf were students not too long ago and founded the company based on the idea that textbooks shouldn’t cost a fortune or weigh a ton. RedShelf is focused on helping transition the entire learning community from print to digital course materials while serving as an advocate for all students.

We are a fast-growing startup (300% year-over-year) based out of the Boyce Building in downtown Chicago. Our goal is to improve the higher education industry through digital textbooks by helping to reduce cost, increase access, and improve outcomes. Also, if you are interested in wearing jeans to work and eating on a private rooftop deck for lunch, RedShelf may be the place for you.

What is the job?

Our Sr. UX/UI Designer will work closely with product managers and developers and will be focused on research, strategy, prototyping, and user testing for a web-based education platform. You will be responsible for:

  • Leading research and user strategy for a growing education platform
  • Working with the team to develop user stories with clear acceptance criteria
  • Assisting in creating a product roadmap based on user research
  • Designing clear, usable prototypes or wireframes
  • Conducting user testing to validate assumptions and designs

What are we looking for?

First and foremost, we are looking for someone who is passionate about user experiences and making an impact in the higher education market. Candidates should have at least 5 years of experience in user experience design and/or user interface design preferably with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design, human computer interaction, or a similar technical field. Additional requirements include:

  • Experience with Agile and/or Scrum development methods
  • Experience with design tools (Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, etc.) and prototyping tools (Axure, InVision, etc.)
  • A good eye for design and the ability to make complex things seem simple and intuitive
  • Ability to manage a variety of different projects or one massive project from start to finish
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Capable of balancing multiple priorities and deadlines while being adaptable to the changing needs of the business

Perks of the Gig (aka Benefits):

As RedShelf is a small and scrappy startup, everyone is expected to put in a little extra effort. We are the type of company where you will see the fruits of your labor immediately and not feel like you are just another cog in the machine. While we typically have longer workdays, it’s counterbalanced with an engaging office culture and a supportive team. Additional perks include annual “RedShelf Retreats” and frequent onsite and offsite events including video game tournaments, sports teams (soccer, baseball, volleyball, etc.), happy hours, volunteer work, and more. RedShelf also offers competitive compensation packages that include company stock options.

EEO Statement:

RedShelf is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Women, people of color, individuals with a disability, veterans, and others who would enrich the diversity of RedShelf are encouraged to apply.
