The Strategic Retail Merchant Development Manager will be an action and results-oriented leader with a proven track record of meeting and exceeding goals in a fast paced, high growth, online business. This role is responsible for developing and maximizing growth of national accounts and acts as the interface between the Key Merchants and Groupon. The Strategic Merchant Development Manager owns responsibility for the development and implementation of their respective category and account level growth strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manages of a portfolio of relationships to meet and exceed revenue targets through increased and expanded merchant utilization the Groupon platform.
  • Builds strong leveragable relationships with all key stakeholders at merchants - including marketing, sales, finance and operations organizations. 
  • Develops a deep understanding of the merchants’ industry, specific company business targets & strategy, processes, value chain and key business drivers.
  • Executes merchant communications strategy to ensure service needs are met and drive continued engagement with Groupon, driving their retention and loyalty.
  • Builds strong understanding of Groupon product offerings and pairs them with strong understanding of merchants to develop a long-term strategy.
  • Develop and share insights with internal Groupon teams that will help drive sales and product development strategy. 
  • Prepares and monitors budgets and forecasts.
  • Continuously updates account plans, including forecasting metrics in Salesforce.
  • Ensures the seamless handover to Operations for aspects of deal execution, launch and close.
  • Focuses on the Groupon deliverable (scope of products, solutions and services) according to merchant and market needs.
  • Serves as the point of contact for escalation.
  • Achieves business KPIs as defined by Sales and Revenue Management.
  • Builds/maintains sustainable relationships with the appropriate merchant decision makers.


Knowledge & Skill Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in degree in marketing, business or other related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years key account management, senior-level sales and/or business management experience.
  • Proficiency with Salesforce.com, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Track record of account retention and growth with success in achieving revenue targets.
  • Proven account management, upselling / cross-selling, analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Solid decision-making skills, sales instincts and sound judgment.
  • Intellectual agility and creativity to respond to changing demands and create new solutions.
  • Strong negotiation and relationship building skills with a high degree of professionalism and poise.
  • A commitment to exceptional service and delivery.
  • Demonstrated business acumen in balancing merchant and business requirements (i.e., financial, strategic & tactical thinking).
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and successfully in a matrixed organization.
  • Organization and time management skills to succeed in a fast paced environment.
