 The Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII) is the nation’s flagship research organization for applying cutting-edge digital technologies to reduce the time and cost of manufacturing, strengthen the capabilities of the U.S. supply chain, and reduce production costs.  The DMDII will develop, demonstrate, deploy and commercialize digital design and manufacturing technologies across key industries.

The Institute is seeking candidates for the position of Manufacturing Systems Engineer, for full-time employment in our Chicago office. 

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the design, installation and manufacturing systems of the DMDII manufacturing facility to ensure development and demonstration of Digital Manufacturing Technologies.  Provide technical support and guidance to project teams, institute members, and implement manufacturing technologies that support projects and objectives.  Analyze and design lean, automated manufacturing cells using systems and simulation tools to optimize the use of space, equipment and digital integration.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and/or performs additions and changes to network hardware and operating systems and attached manufacturing devices; includes investigation, analysis, recommendation, configuration, installation and testing of new network hardware and software.
  • Provides direct support in the day-to-day operations on shop floor network hardware and operating systems; duties include evaluation of system utilization, monitoring response time and primary support for detection and correction of operational problems.
  • Troubleshoots at the physical level of the network, working with network measurement hardware and software, as well as physical checking and testing of hardware devices, at the logical level working with communication protocols, such as MT Connect.
  • Participates in planning design, technical review and implementation for new network infrastructure hardware and network operating systems for data communication networks.
  • Maintains network infrastructure standards.
  • Provides technical consultation, training and support to IT staff as designated by director.
  • Manufacturing software/hardware management (updates, licenses, etc.)
  • Manage and maintain data collected from the manufacturing area.

 Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Systems Engineering, Manufacturing Systems Engineering, or other Engineering degrees with relevant experience
  • 5+ years experience in Manufacturing IT and/or Systems Engineering
  • Proven track record of manufacturing process improvements through insertion of technology
  • Proven experience with:
    • Digital manufacturing technologies
    • Experience in Robotics/ Automation integration
    • Experience integrating manufacturing equipment systems
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Hands-on, team oriented and committed to advancement of manufacturing technologies
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Strong problem solving capabilities
  • Strong project management skills
  • Strong team leadership skills
  • Technical training and presentation skills
  • Computer literacy: MS Office, CAPP/MES, SPC, PLM software, PLC’s, data integration and communication, internet protocols. Manufacturing equipment communications such as MT Connect Knowledge of CAD/CAM and CNC and CMM programming is a plus.
