Did you ever stand in front of the wine aisle and wonder what to get?  Well the overwhelming majority of people, even avid wine drinkers, experience the same problem!  savvo is revolutionizing the way average people buy wine by making the selection process easier, more individualized, and effective.  We accomplish this by deploying touchscreen wine recommending kiosks in grocery store wine aisles, matching shoppers with the right wine for them.   Brilliant, huh?!

We are a growing startup with a commercially viable product, paying customers, and a huge market opportunity.   We’ve learned a ton by being live in retail stores for the past eight months and talking to countless users.  Now we have to take these learning and develop an even more intuitive, effective, and engaging user experience.  We are passionate about what we do and are confident we are part of something huge.  We want to surround ourselves with people who not only add their skills and talents but also bring their drive to make savvo the best things since...well…wine!

We are looking for an experienced UX/UI designer to guide the development of version 2.0 of our “Digital Sommelier,” encompassing the entire shopping experience from in-aisle engagement, through our user interface, to the checkout counter and beyond.  This could be on a project-basis for cash or, for the right person, it could be a permanent role on the team.

Our current Digital Sommelier is a web application running on an iPad.  We are making the switch to a native iOS application that will eventually scale to smartphone as well.  Other important “stuff” about the role:

Skills Stuff:

  • Exceptional visual and user-focused design skills with an eye for detail
  • Experience designing simple and intuitive user interfaces
  • Ability to transform design and interaction ideas into wireframes and mockups
  • Keen sense of typography, color, imagery, and graphics
  • Strong portfolio showcasing your visual or UI/UX design talent
  • Detailed knowledge of and experience with iOS 7 Human Interface Guidelines
  • Retail shopping experience would be awesome
  • Expertise in HTML/CSS/JavaScript or any fluency with Objective-C and Cocoa with an ability to implement what you design would be even awesomer (but not required)

Position Stuff:

  • Create shopper flow charts (in-aisle as well as through the application)
  • Categorize retail wine shopping experiences and design for the optimal mix of core users and use cases
  • Interact with shoppers to get at the core of their problem, design solutions, test, iterate and repeat!
  • Work with our developers and business people to design version 2.0 of our Digital Sommelier iOS iPad app from the ground up (your lead!)
  • Ensure brand vision is being achieved at every touch point a shopper has with savvo (make sure we are who we say we are!)
  • Assist in developing an overall brand strategy and Style Guide

Personal Stuff

  • Creative: if you’re a good designer, of course you have to be creative (thought we should mention it anyway)
  • Experienced: we have a lot of ideas, what we need to add is the experience and wisdom of a professional!
  • Collaborative: must play nice with others, be able to give and take constructive criticism
  • Lean and agile (methodologies!): this should be an evolving process with end-users engaged in every step
  • Flexible in life: we're a startup, you must be able to "roll with the punches" as the target moves
  • Fun: startups are hard work, you have to be part of what makes it worthwhile!
  • It would really help if you didn’t hate wine.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Can dedicate at least 20 hours a week to the project
  • Would love working with us so much (and vise versa) that we couldn’t live without each other and we would make the position increasingly more permanent and encompassing (especially upon funding)

Sound like you?  Let’s talk!
