Job Summary:

The Web Designer/Developer is responsible for all design, styling, interaction, and markup for digital communications and marketing (websites, email communications, apps, and other electronic media) for Alumni Relations and Development at Northwestern University. The position has knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with an emphasis on creating and refining digital user experiences that advance the University's alumni engagement and participation goals. The Web Developer is both production focused and client facing and will work closely with the Associate Director, Digital Communications; Director, Digital Communications; and the Marketing and Communications graphic design team to uphold Northwestern brand and editorial standards.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Associate Director, Digital Communications and Alumni Development Enterprise Applications team to establish styles for public facing web pages and forms that follow best practices in modern web design and usability. Look for opportunities to integrate new features and technologies in an effective manner in a responsive website environment.
  • Design and build webpages and microsites from the ground up in HTML with CSS and JavaScript.
  • Edit and update web content.
  • Work closely with clients on information architecture, usability and best practices in web design.
  • Develop and maintain architecture for ARD's suite of websites, microsites, and social apps.
  • Set up and maintain tracking in Google Analytics and create regular analytics reports for clients on performance of the sites overall and individual campaigns.
  • Manage the web content management system from an administrative perspective including: adding new webpages and content blocks, customizing the CMS (CSS, menus) for ease-of-use, and handling system troubleshooting.
  • Provide front-line email and phone support for CMS users. Address and resolve strategic, logistical, and technological issues. Proactively coach existing users surrounding: site standards, how to package and label web content, search engine optimization (seo), and best practices in maintaining an easy-to-understand website information architecture.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple day-to-day projects as well as long-term, complex projects.
  • Serve as a backup for the Associate Director, Digital Communications in areas such as updating the ARD websites and in various other project-management capacities related to electronic communications.
  • Manage digital design projects and work closely with clients to manage expectations, team roles, and the status of projects.
  • Present design solutions to clients for websites and online communications.
  • Build, manage, and send custom HTML emails within various email marketing software platforms.
  • Support administrative staff with creation of HTML email campaigns and email newsletters while maintaining a consistent look and feel.
  • Design graphic assets—email banners, photo graphics, etc.—as well as custom HTML layouts within an email marketing tool.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • 2-5 years' experience maintaining, supporting, enhancing, and testing the front-end of content-intensive websites within a fast-paced environment
  • Experience working with responsive websites
  • Expert HTML skills
  • Intermediate or greater CSS3 skills

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Excellent interpersonal client service and negotiating skills.
  • Ability to execute and manage numerous jobs concurrently, work independently and in teams, and manage projects from start to completion with minimal instruction.
  • Strong front-end website development skills and experience (HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript).
  • Familiarity with and ability to learn and use a CSS Preprocessor.
  • Familiarity with mobile website frameworks.
  • Basic skillset for building HTML emails and familiarity with email marketing software.
  • Strong design sense.
  • Graphics and photo editing capabilities within software such as Adobe Photoshop.

Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)

  • Experience with SEO, web usability best practices, web design, and web application testing a plus.
  • Experience creating and designing user friendly interfaces for web applications a plus.
  • Understanding of how JavaScript can be used throughout a website.
  • Experience with blogging software such as Wordpress a plus.
  • Strong online portfolio with links to live websites and screen shots of past sites.
  • Strong organizational skill and time management.
  • Must be able to remain professional and open minded while receiving and giving feedback in design reviews and user testing sessions.
  • Experience with iModules CMS and email marketing tool a plus.
