I am running into startups that haven't hired very good attorneys. If you are a startup, be certain your attorney knows what the heck they are doing. I can recommend some-but there are others. An attorney that screws up even a little can doom your fundraising going forward. Make sure they have been in the startup rodeo before.
Great legal work can be prohibitively expensive. Do you have any advice for startups trying to find the best value?
Great advice, thanks Jeff. I think a problem arises when startups hire the best attorney they can find but then as they get deeper into their development they come across an attorney who they realize would have been better to work with from the beginning, especially when the conversations turn to tax law, private placements, etc. Depending on how far along the team is with the company's growth, would it better for them to start fresh with the right attorney?
http://www.xconomy.com/san-francisco/2013/01/15/california-to-hit-startu... California hits startups with retroactive tax bills. Illinois take note. Don't dip into this well.
