co-founded Hyde Park Angels. Was a trader, and traded my own money-contrary to a lot of guys out there-I wasn't a broker. My word is my bond. Try to help you out even if I am not invested, and seek to make Chicago the best place around for supporting startups. We have a good base, but can do more.

I am running into startups that haven't hired very good attorneys. If you are a startup, be certain your attorney knows what the heck they are doing. I can recommend some-but there are others. An attorney that screws up even a little can doom your fundraising going forward. Make sure they have been in the startup rodeo before.

Moss Schermerhorn

Great legal work can be prohibitively expensive. Do you have any advice for startups trying to find the best value?

Brian Shields

Great advice, thanks Jeff. I think a problem arises when startups hire the best attorney they can find but then as they get deeper into their development they come across an attorney who they realize would have been better to work with from the beginning, especially when the conversations turn to tax law, private placements, etc. Depending on how far along the team is with the company's growth, would it better for them to start fresh with the right attorney?

http://www.xconomy.com/san-francisco/2013/01/15/california-to-hit-startu... California hits startups with retroactive tax bills. Illinois take note. Don't dip into this well.

Today it was publicly announced that Hyde Park Angels invested along with others in a start up company called Cloudbot.com.     It's really a cool company, with a great set of entrepreneurs.  HPA was happy to be a part of the deal.   I would encourage everyone on BiC to sign up for their beta.  ...

There are rumors of a new tech center opening up in Chicago with office space for start ups.  I think this is a great idea, but I have one caution.   The cell service in many areas of the city stinks.  Over by the Merchandise Mart, I have had trouble.   Virtually everywhere on Michigan Ave or in...

http://blog.asmartbear.s3.amazonaws.com/iTunes/BalladLeanStartup.mp3   Thought this was humorous.  Especially to those entrepreneurs struggling to make it.  Laugh at yourself.

Over the years you acquire a lot of friends.  I have a couple that moved to Silicon Valley in the mid 1980's and did really well.  One of them started investing in Social Venture Partners (svpi.org).     Social Venture Partners is having a meeting on November 1 at the Park Grille.  If you are...
