Interior Define, a Chicago-based digitally native furniture startup, announced on Tuesday that it has raised $8 million in its latest funding round.
Founded in 2014, Interior Define sells built-to-order chairs and couches online. The company’s couches, which start at around $1,000, can be made shorter or wider by up to four inches to fit the customer’s apartment. The company is also launching a bed collection in mid-May, which will feature customizable upholstered headboards.
The company has tripled its revenues year-over-year since its founding, and is on track to do so again in 2017, a company spokesperson said.
Although built on an e-commerce delivery model, Interior Define has a brick-and-mortar "Guideshop" location in Lincoln Park where prospective customers can see an assortment of models and customization options. The company will open a second showroom in New York’s SoHo neighborhood later this month. A third location is on the roadmap for later this year.
Warby Parker, a New York-based prescription eyeglasses startup, has seen tremendous success building small brick-and-mortar showrooms while maintaining a focus on its online roots. In addition to bringing in customers who might otherwise not discover its products, this hybrid approach gives consumers an opportunity to test-sit a chair or sofa to get a feel for its quality before buying.
Breakout Capital led the round, in which Pritzker Group Venture Capital and Listen Ventures also participated, according to Crain’s. Breakout Capital is run by Brandon Labrum and Duncan Davis, who are also the co-founder duo behind Shoe Drop, an on-demand shoe and leather care startup.
Interior Define has 26 employees at its Chicago headquarters and will have six employees at its soon-to-open New York location.
"We are adding new team members in Chicago this year, across customer experience, merchandising, sales and engineering," Royer said.
