Building a new business requires a lot of commitment. An entrepreneur has to do a lot of work themselves, wearing several hats at once. Not every task the company requires will be in your wheelhouse, but in the first year you will need to be these 5 people… all wrapped into one.

1. The Numbers Guru (CFO)

Manage a budget while still finding creative ways to spend frugally. Keep the company running while you work to turn a profit, and set a financial plan for growth for the short- and long-term future.

2. The Visionary

Hopefully a big idea got you here in the first place… but it doesn’t end now. Always be planning… don’t be afraid of your big ideas. Review the company’s vision and mission, and know where you want it to be in six months, one year, and three years.

3. The Producer

Having big ideas is one thing... the key is to execute them. You are the Chief Sales Officer and brand ambassador. Talk to everyone, and A.B.C – always be closing.

4. Mad Man

You are Don Draper from Mad Men. Marketing doesn’t have to be expensive – it has to be effective. Know your audience. Learn Google Analytics. Create a social media plan.

5. Customer Service Department

That’s you! Whether you’re B2B or B2C, you are there to make people happy. Conflict resolution is crucial – service your customers at an A+ level.

As the business grows, hire people to take over these positions…the new numbers guru can be CFO, for example. Find trustworthy people who will share the company vision and who will be as committed as you are.
