CHICAGO - (www.twitter.com/techaccesstv) - Emmi Solutions, LLC, a Chicago-based healthcare communications company and pioneer in patient engagement, was issued a patent (#8,190,446) by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) which relates to its ability to prescribe, track and store patients’ interactions with its systems. The Emmi® platform enables hospitals to measure the impact of patient engagement and achieve quantifiable, actionable results.

“Emmi was founded on the idea that delivering the right information across the continuum of care will drive improved clinical and financial outcomes,” said Jordan Dolin, Co-Founder and Vice Chairman, Emmi Solutions. “In order to quantify these outcomes, we realized it was fundamental that we track the delivery of information at the individual patient level, which is why we applied for this patent nearly a decade ago.”

With more than ten years of experience – and almost 4 million programs prescribed – multiple studies have quantified the financial and clinical impact of the Emmi platform and its ability to empower patients to take more active roles in their care. Specific data demonstrates the Emmi platform improves efficiencies, reduces surgical cancellation rates and length of stay, and improves efficiency and patient experience of care scores.

“With shifting models of reimbursement, we need effective, affordable and measurable ways to get whole populations of patients to take greater responsibility for their care,” said Michael Krouse, Senior Vice President and CIO, OhioHealth. “We chose to partner with Emmi because they have a deep understanding of how the market is changing and they are constantly building new programs, technologies and capabilities in anticipation of the evolving demands of the industry.”

The patent also relates to Emmi’s ability to generate access codes, establish view-by-dates, and interact with patients using a multi-media approach. The Emmi platform allows providers to engage patients when and where they are most comfortable and on the devices they already own. The clinical setting is not an ideal teachable moment for patients to absorb information: studies show engaging them in a setting where they are more comfortable leads to dramatically higher information retention rates and greater likelihood they will act upon the information given.

“Hospitals and health systems can’t continue to look at the inpatient and outpatient settings as different business. Systematically collaborating and sharing information benefits all parties involved – most importantly the patient,” adds Devin Gross, CEO, Emmi Solutions. “The economics of healthcare have changed: the focus is on value, not volume. Our clients are being held accountable for outcomes, shouldn’t we be as well? The ability to measure the impact of our solutions on a patient-by-patient level is the cornerstone of our business and has been our focus for the last 10 years. The fact that we now own the patent on this invaluable technology is very meaningful to all of us.”
