I could have put myself through college with Bitcoins?

Bitcoins are slowly but surely becoming a normal form of currency in our advanced online culture. Upon writing this post, the price of one Bitcoin has reached almost $1200, and all that makes me think is my college experience cost about 87 of these virtual coins.

Now I have been very confused and at the same time negative when the conversation of bringing this online currency to the mass public comes about. I never understood if it was real or if it would be a viable way to exchange. From my little knowledge of it I thought honestly that it was some sort of online scam and it would be gone in no time. Then upon logging into my WordPress account not to long ago to manage my other blog I realize that they decided to start accepting this currency back in 2012. Next thing I know I turn on CNBC to a discussion about if Ebay will start to accept Bitcoin and thats when I knew this wasn't just a phase.

In the Fall of 2011, when I was just a lowly freshman on my way to Illinois State University.. I could have cashed in my last check from my part time job at Jamba Juice ($200 because I took off half the week for Lollapalooza, it was a good choice at the time) and bought about 87 Bitcoins and let them sit until, oh I dont know, November of 2013 when I am knee deep in student loans eating noodles for every meal. Instead I think I spent that extra $200 for on transportation and parking for what was supposed to be "The Greatest Music Festival of My Life!". It was pretty okay.

Now obviously this is a ridiculous situation, I coulda bought Tesla at its low too but I never did that. But the point is that I myself have to be open to new things like Bitcoin in the world we live in. Innovation is moving faster than ever before. All you have to do is poke around BuiltInChicago.org and you see it everywhere. People are coming up with new world changing ideas and even if you don't think it will work someone out there does. The faster I learn to adapt to this new form of thinking the easier it will be to stay ahead of the game.

I'm curious as to what you guys think about this new form of currency. Have you been able to open up your minds to this new idea or do you have your doubts for its future? Also, what will be the next innovative idea to take over our culture? I have my money on Packback but I may be a little bias.

Post your comments below, I am curious to hear what the Chicago community is thinking!
