SEO, PPC, SEM - digital marketing acronyms explained

analytics

There are plenty of us working with online platforms daily from social media sites, to websites, to online financing etc, but how many of us really know what certain marketing acronyms actually mean?

Our aims and ambitions are simple when online, we want to reach the most appropriate audience for our business, we want to target correctly, we want to gain more business, and we want to be seen as forward thinking.  But, unless we understand some of the marketing terminology, we sometimes struggle with reaching our aims and ambitions.

With a long list of acronyms to choose from, here are seven of the most well-known ones, the ones we hear banded about regularly.

GA
GA - Google Analytics is used more frequently now than ever before as many businesses want to know instantly what traffic (how many visits) they have had to their website, and Marketers can find out audience information plus sales figures.

SEO
We hear this everyday when in business, and it stands for Search Engine Optimization.  Meaning to be able to use proven techniques in order for your website to become high ranking in online search results organically.  This can be through the use of specific key words, images or even links to other websites.

PPC
This is another of the most used acronyms in business. Pay Per Click, quite easy to understand as far as acronyms go - a way to advertise your business and each time a ‘potential consumer’ clicks on your advert a pre-decided amount will be paid to the promoter/publisher.  Alternatively, the advertiser can agree to go against other advertisers in a bid based Pay Per Click, which can be more cost effective if there are plenty of clicks!

RSS
People use RSS in conversation like we know straight away what it means, when in fact we really have no clue!  RSS stands for Rich Site Summary, an RSS feed is talked about often, especially in newsrooms across the globe.  RSS usually relates to fast moving frequently/regularly updated information - used by news outlets, bloggers, public relations companies, and even podcasters.

SEM

Search Engine Marketing is similar to SEO, the main difference is that SEM is paid for marketing to promote a website through a search engine, whereas SEO is an organic way of increasing the ranking of a website.

SM
Another one that we may not know instantly is SM, and most of us use this platform daily - it’s simply Social Media.  We use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and others more than we have ever used social media in the past.

WoM
Again this is something that we all do everyday in business, Word of Mouth.  We promote our business through attending meetings, over the phone, and with friends and family without realising that we are using Word of Mouth - one of the greatest free marketing tools available to each of us.
