We’re Looking for an Assistant Managing Editor

Built In’s editorial team reaches millions of tech professionals by reporting on the news in the markets and communities we serve, working with outside experts to share their stories and experiences, and producing original features and professional development content across a wide variety of both tech and business topics. As the team — and its reach — has grown, so too has its complexity. Now, we’re looking for an assistant managing editor to refine our editorial operations and help prepare us for continued expansion.

You’ll report to the managing director of editorial and work closely with content team leaders to improve both the efficiency and effectiveness of our production and distribution systems with the goal of expanding our reach. You’ll document, maintain and ensure compliance with best practices and processes. And you’ll generate and implement creative solutions to operational challenges as they present themselves.

This is an exciting opportunity — and a new position — in a growing department that’s doing ambitious editorial work and enthusiastically invests in team culture, even with our current, remote-only workforce. The ideal candidate is an extremely detail-oriented self-starter; organized (like very, very, organized); and motivated by working with and supporting an editorial team committed to delivering a consistent, high-quality product that instructs, informs and inspires tens of thousands of people every day.

How You’ll Contribute

  • Oversee the production, distribution, improvement, and expansion of our biweekly content newsletter, which has grown from about 50,000 subscribers to nearly one million over the past 18 months; work with various stakeholders to create, audit and improve other distribution efforts.
  • Collaborate with editorial team members, and across several editorial teams, to develop, maintain and/or ensure compliance with best practices and processes; own the editorial team’s library of resources, documentation and employee onboarding and professional development materials.
  • Manage the team’s production calendars; monthly budget, subscriptions and expenses; and editorial roadmap, working with the director of editorial and other team leaders as needed.
  • Support the growth of our editorial operation by building reports and dashboards that give the team greater visibility into how our content is performing, both in terms of reaching and providing value to our readers and in terms of supporting other business objectives; provide data-driven recommendations for process improvements; share analytics in team meetings to inform ongoing strategic decision-making and influence how and where we promote our editorial work.
  • Serve as a point person and liaison between editorial and other Built In departments, including sales, marketing, product and engineering. Act as a champion for editorial inside the company.
  • Cooperatively take on other operational duties, roles or responsibilities as needed and assigned.

What You Need

  • A minimum of three years editorial experience — or directly relevant operations experience, such as in a project management role.
  • The basics: strong news judgment; familiarity with AP style; an interest in startups, technology and entrepreneurship; excellent written and verbal communication skills; and an eye for engaging, audience-grabbing headlines and display copy.
  • A proven track record of building strong, collaborative working relationships with colleagues and with teams across an organization.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and a demonstrated ability to independently manage multiple projects simultaneously, set and meet deadlines under pressure, and anticipate operational needs.

  • Come with some management experience — in editorial, digital media or a related field — or a demonstrated ability to lead and motivate others, as success in this role will create opportunities to build or contribute to an expanded operations team overseeing production and distribution efforts.
