We’re Looking for an Associate Editor

Built In’s editorial team reaches millions of tech professionals every month through deeply reported features and explainers covering key tech concepts and industry trends. The core takeaways of these stories often remain relevant for years, even as the statistics and examples they rely on become dated. This editor will work with a team of reporters to ensure our catalog of explainer journalism reaches the widest possible audience and continues to serve our readers for the long haul.

Reporting to our senior features editor, the person in this newly created position will draw on best practices from journalism and SEO to develop and execute a strategy to improve our existing stories and optimize them for search and continued social distribution. In some cases this might involve minor tweaks, like updating old statistics, adjusting display copy or defining key terms. Other times, new sections or wholesale rewrites drawing on new reporting may be necessary. In all your work, you will put the reader first and make each story as engaging, informative and actionable as it can possibly be. You will also be a resource to the broader editorial organization — and a liaison between the SEO team and our reporters and editors — in implementing established best practices and the lessons learned through our experimentation.

You’ll join an ambitious editorial team with reporting and editing experience from publications like The Atlantic, Pacific Standard, CNET, Huffington Post, Vox Media and Wirecutter. This team, which is primarily responsible for building and retaining our audience of tech professionals, reports to the VP of Growth and it is not involved with the production of employer branding or any other paid-for content.

How You’ll Contribute

  • Lead and manage a small team of reporters to update, expand upon and elevate existing Built In explainers while juggling reporting duties of your own.
  • Experiment with new story optimization approaches, while closely tracking performance metrics, and develop documented best practices based on these insights.
  • Share discoveries made through this experimentation with the broader editorial organization to help us improve the quality and performance of all our stories across the board.
  • Build editorial-driven landing pages that help readers navigate Built In’s collection of evergreen tech and business reporting.
  • Provide substantive comments, line edits and copy edits on drafts to elevate the quality of our storytelling and help our reporters grow professionally.

What You Need

  • Three to five years of experience in a journalistic capacity, and experience reporting on technical subjects like software development, finance or data science.
  • One to two years of editing experience and familiarity with the fundamentals of search engine optimization.
  • Standout organizational and project management skills.
  • Strong substantive, line and copy editing skills, and an eye for engaging headlines.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and an ability to lead and motivate.

  • Past experience in a full-time SEO role, or a role with a significant SEO component.
  • Proven track record developing and documenting new processes, and conducting experiments based on quantitative data and feedback.
