Managing Editor
Sprout Social is growing our content team, and we’re looking for a managing editor to help us get to the next level.
The person we’re looking for is an experienced editor, a deadline-oriented project manager and an investigative analyst. They will lead execution of our content strategy, primarily focusing on editorial planning, overseeing content production and analyzing content performance—all to fuel our awareness and acquisition goals for Sprout.
On a day-to-day basis, they will manage our publishing calendar and content production, including writing briefs, making assignments, editing content and proactively driving collaboration with colleagues across marketing. They will manage and grow our freelance, partner and contributor writing pool and oversee writer capacity planning while providing regular constructive feedback. Additionally, they will be responsible for reporting on and analyzing content performance to identify opportunities.
The ideal candidate is a clear and direct communicator who thrives on solving hard problems as part of a high-performing team. They are comfortable working independently in a high-volume, deadline-driven environment. They will be a senior individual contributor on the content team, reporting to the Sr. Manager of Content & Communications.
Qualifications
These are the minimum qualifications that our hiring team is looking for in this role:
- 2+ years of experience planning and managing an editorial calendar and publication(s) for a brand, either in-house or in an agency environment
- 2+ years of experience using SEO research and best practices to inform content
- 2+ years of experience using Google Analytics and other tools to report on content performance
- 1+ years of experience hiring and managing freelance writers
Additionally, these are the preferred qualifications that would indicate a particularly strong candidate:
- Strong understanding of the value of social media for business and best practices for content distribution and social strategy

Within one month, you will…
- Attend Sprout Social new hire training to learn about our company, culture and products and understand the value we deliver to customers
- Meet with key partners on the marketing, brand creative and sales teams to learn about the scope of their work and past content collaborations
- Develop a firm understanding of Sprout’s brand positioning and writing guidelines
- Familiarize yourself with Sprout’s current editorial calendar as well as past articles, data reports, guides, videos and existing content
- Soak up knowledge from every team you interact with and ask a lot of questions
Within three months, you will...
- Have a strong understanding of Sprout’s content strategy and the role of content in accomplishing our business goals and objectives
- Take over management of Sprout’s editorial calendar, ensuring we meet deadlines, hit publishing goals and adjust where needed
- Edit and provide feedback to team members and freelancers, working with them to improve their pieces and grow as content creators
- Collaborate with the International Marketing Lead to localize existing content and support our EMEA marketing strategy
- Understand the ins and outs of project management and content tools like Jira, Wordpress and Smartsheet
Within six months, you will...
- Lead our quarterly editorial planning process, overseeing the publication of 30-40 pieces/quarter by the content team
- Assign pieces to team members and freelancers, managing the content creation process from ideation to publication
- Collaborate with the acquisition team to plan content for marketing campaigns
- Regularly use Google Analytics, Salesforce, Sprout Social and other tools to understand content performance across different dimensions
- Begin iterating on and build systems and processes to scale our content function
- Be comfortable and proactive about working with our team and collaborators to give feedback and push both the creativity and performance of our content
- Propose approaches to test within our content and make recommendations for improvements
Within 12 months, you will…
- Work closely with team members on mapping out new content campaigns and identifying all of the deliverables needed for success
- Contribute to defining the content strategy that will get us to Sprout’s next level of growth
- Surprise us! Use your unique ideas and abilities to change our team and marketing efforts in beneficial ways that we haven’t even considered yet.
