Sphera, the former Operational Excellence and Risk Management business of IHS Inc. (“Company”) is a leading global provider of enterprise software and services that enable companies to manage and optimize their environmental, health, safety and sustainability (“EHS&S”) processes. Amongst a wide variety of use cases, the software allows customers to standardize and automate processes such as incident reporting, to monitor emissions and ensure regulatory compliance and to track chemical inventory throughout a manufacturing cycle. The company was recently spun off by IHS and acquired by Genstar Capital, essentially positioning it as a $100MM start up.

Summary:

 

The Senior Technical Writer is responsible for creating, developing, planning, writing and editing operational, instructional, maintenance or test procedures for multimedia or 
web-based publications, from planning stage through delivery.  This person will work with the development team on the Sphera Essential product as well as on the Sphera Cloud projects.

 

General Job Duties:

 

  • Performs analysis to determine user assistance requirements
  • Designs, creates, updates, and maintains some or all of the following user assistance 
    deliverables: online help, training materials, user guides; release notes;as 
    installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and quick reference guides, demonstration videos
  • Strong understanding of technical writing processes to produce a consistent level of 
    accuracy and timeliness of work
  • Responsible for meeting one or more team quality metrics and for reviewing the quality of work of others
  • Works independently or as part of a team
  • Requires consistent use of independent judgment to proactively problem-solve issues
  • Contributes to the maintenance of our style guide, and regularly reviews documentation for grammar, consistency, technical accuracy, and good organization
  • Contributes to the design and update of documentation templates
  • Helps to determine document guidelines
  • Performs other duties as required

Requirements

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Technical Communications, English, Journalism) or related field/equivalent experience. 
     
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in the software industry

Other Skills:

 

  • Strong analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of databases, client-server and cloud-based applications.
  • Strong interpersonal skills – must be able to work effectively as part of a 
    project/program team and foster team cooperation.
  • Demonstrated project management experience
  • Must understand Technical Documentation processes and procedures.
  • Must have extensive experience interviewing Subject Matter Experts and converting 
    that information into clear and concise user documentation.
  • Must be able to learn new software and technologies quickly.
  • Must have experience in a software development environment.
  • Experience with RoboHelp, Framemaker, Word, Captivate, PowerPoint, and Visio.
  • Knowledge of HTML/XML/DITA/Structured Authoring is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Component Content Management Systems is a plus.
  • Ability to comprehend current developments in their area of expertise
  • Very strong oral and written communication skills
  • Displays sense of urgency in resolving client issues
  • Comfortable in working in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Self-starter, proactive, and team player

  • Ability to physically perform general office requirements.
  • Must be able to perform essential responsibilities with or

Travel: Occasional travel including overnight domestic or 
international trips may be required.
