Hello, we’re Built In

We are a network of online communities for technology companies and startups. We connect talent to tech companies, cover local tech news and host events. Headquartered in Chicago, we currently operate in seven markets: Chicago, LA, NYC, Colorado, Austin, Boston and Seattle.

We’re looking for a Tech Writer for a 3 month contract

We are looking for someone who is a startup lovin’, analytical, tech-crazy writer with a fresh voice and style. You will pitch and write at least 7-10 tech-focused stories per week for our parent site BuiltIn.com on three topics:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Blockchain
  • Big Data

You will write breaking news (startup fundings, exits, etc.) and community content (profiles on startups, entrepreneurs, etc). Most of your stories will be between 500 to 800 words.

Deadlines + Organization

Ideate and produce error-free articles each day, five days per week. Bonus points for the organized and process-driven among us.

What you need

  • You’re an experienced writer
  • Previous experience writing for a tech publication preferred.

Ever since Anna-Mi Widman joined Built In four years ago, she’s had a vision of user retention through personalization. “We have so many different types of users,” the product director explained, citing engineers, product managers and data scientists, among others. More users means more data, however — and data makes it harder for users to find what’s relevant to them. “Personalization solves this.” Now, Widman finally gets to execute on that vision, and the business impact can’t be overstated. “We’re bending that retention curve and bringing users back more often.”

“Built In’s vision is helping tech professionals achieve their career goals, but Built In does that for its own employees,” said Sandhya Hemakumar. Since joining the company a year ago, she's been delighted by the autonomy she has to pitch new tools and technologies to leadership. “We move at a very fast pace, so there’s a lot of room for development.” Hemakumar is currently building a new testing strategy that will allow for faster product rollouts, and said there’s been great collaboration between product and engineering. “We worked together in planning a roadmap from the get go.”
