Groupon’s Corporate Counsel – Privacy & Regulatory will have the opportunity to play an important role in advising our global enterprise on U.S. and international privacy,data security, and regulatory matters. As part of Groupon’s global Privacy & Regulatory team, this person will collaborate and work cross-functionally across multiple business units, including product, marketing, engineering, information security, and sales. This position is a uniquely diverse role, but there will be a heavy emphasis on EU privacy initiatives in the near term.

Job Duties

• Generally advise on US and international privacy and data security laws and regulations, including rapidly evolving requirements
• Assist with and lead various aspects of Groupon’s GDPR compliance efforts
• Oversee, maintain, and regularly audit Groupon’s international data transfer mechanisms
• Support all business channels in evaluating regulatory risk and rendering practical advice to advance key business initiatives
• Assist in vendor due diligence and the negotiation of privacy and data security provisions in a wide range of agreements
• Conduct periodic and as-needed business audits and privacy impact assessments  to assess privacy and data security compliance
• Help incorporate privacy-by-design principles into new and existing products and initiatives and otherwise foster privacy and security awareness worldwide
• Support Information Security and Database teams to ensure  compliance with applicable data security administrative, physical, and technical safeguards
• Work as an integral part of the global Privacy & Regulatory team in establishing initiatives, planning and developing key strategies, and advising the company on how to implement guidance from regulatory and privacy agencies
• Investigate and respond to government inquiries, as needed

Qualifications/Requirements/Qualities

• Position located in our downtown Chicago headquarters
• JD with active bar membership in any state
• 5+ years’ experience at a reputable law firm and/or corporate legal department
• Experience with online, mobile, and ecommerce regulatory and privacy issues preferred
• Experience with US and/or EU privacy and data security laws and regulations, including the GDPR
• Experience with key regulatory frameworks in the ecommerce space, such as CAN-SPAM, CASL, and state/federal consumer protection laws
• Some experience interfacing directly with state/federal agencies, investigatory bodies, and legislative institutions helpful
• Comfortable and effective working with diverse teams, whether local or virtual
• Sound business judgment and ability to think creatively to render practical legal advice  and solve complex business problems
• Great sense of humor and ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
