Company Overview

At Motorola Solutions, we create technologies our customers refer to as their lifeline. Our technology platforms in communications, software, video and services help our customers work safely and more efficiently. Whether it’s helping firefighters see through smoke, enabling police officers to see around street corners, or reliably keeping the lights on in homes and businesses around the world, our work supports those who put their lives on the line to keep us safe. Bring your passion, potential and talents to Motorola Solutions, and help us usher in a new era in public safety and security.

Department Overview
Motorola Solutions’ innovations, products and services play essential roles in people’s lives. Our end-to-end suite of software solutions helps our customers answer thousands of emergency calls and text messages, and process video, disparate evidence and records. We are also proud to be industry leaders in video security solutions installed in more than 120 countries at thousands of customer sites, including school campuses, transportation systems, healthcare centers, public venues, critical infrastructure, prisons, factories, casinos, airports, financial institutions, government facilities, and retailers.
Working with our R&D teams to help source, prepare and generate data to build AI solutions that provide insights that potentially help save lives could be your job. Our products leverage cutting edge voice technology, language models, natural language understanding, video analytics, and machine learning to enable our customers to focus on what matters while providing faster responses, safer outcomes and greater transparency.
The candidate will join a talented team of data scientists and engineers (located in Chicago, Boston, Vancouver and Krakow, Poland) in the Chief Technology Office at Motorola Solutions working on developing mission-critical AI solutions for our public safety and commercial customers. Our mission is to provide meaningful value to MSI’s customers by developing domain-specific applications and services in the areas of Speech & Audio, Machine Translation, Natural Language Understanding and Computer Vision.
Job Description

Join our team to become a cornerstone part of Artificial Intelligence development and lead our efforts in creating one of the most critical pieces of data science and machine learning workflow — the datasets for training and testing!. This crucial role will help determine need, manage sourcing, measure impact and help build tools to improve efficiency of the entire data process for our R&D teams.

  • Understand the need/type of data required for an AI project with the goal of anticipating the requirements well in advance of starting development (including tracking current performance issues with QA, roadmap plans from PdMs, and the goals of team leads).

  • Be able to put together a plan to source the data (and annotations), including scoping effort and cost.

  • Work with our R&D teams to identify concrete requirements for tactical data needs and integrate data pipelines into our workflows for training and validation.

  • Direct a small engineering team to build tools to make the acquisition (or synthesis) and annotation of data easy and efficient.

  • Manage teams, budget, external service providers and legal/policy considerations in support of the above.

We’re excited about the work we are doing in AI. We often describe it as “Mission Critical AI” because our approach is founded on our many years of Public Safety experience and knowledge. We know the mission-critical needs of our customers are unique and different from the consumer technologies that leverage AI today.

Desired Skills/Qualifications:

  • Excellent project management skills; able to interface with stakeholders to prioritize competing projects; set and maintain a schedule for milestone and project completions.

  • Excellent communication and documentation skills; ability to interact with data scientists, engineers, product management, in-house annotators, and remote workers.

  • Programming skills (Python preferred) and database familiarity in order to understand and direct development of metrics calculation over annotated datasets.

  • Experience with Linux/Unix

  • Basic knowledge or desire to grow skills in data science and machine learning

  • Experience in projects with dataset crowdsourcing/annotation platforms (Mechanical Turk, Dataturks, etc.)

  • 5+ years of project management or related experience
