Root was founded on the idea of making data-driven decisions. For our Competitive Intelligence (CI) team, this means using market and competitive data to better understand our current position and guiding our steps to strengthening it.

We are looking for a Lead Competitive Intelligence Analyst to help spearhead the development of our CI team. Most of the CI work we have done up to this point has been ad hoc and owned within disparate groups. Now, we will be investing in building out a centralized team to double down on utilizing data on other carriers to inform our position and strategy. The CI team will ensure that we have a strong understanding of how we compare to the market and how changes to our pricing/product impact that positioning.

One of the first challenges to tackle will be to determine what data we should ingest, how that data is to be analyzed, and the many ways we will disseminate those insights effectively. While this team will be primarily focused on delivering value to our pricing and modeling teams, we know their impact will span beyond those groups.

The right person for this job is someone who is curious, structured, loves to build, and has a deep understanding of the industry. Root moves deliberately and quickly. The ideal candidate will work hard to understand how Root works and build the ideal solutions for our company based on a blend of their past experiences and our company’s unique attributes.

Reports to: Director of Product and Pricing

What you'll be doing

• • Compile and analyze market data to inform rating and segmentation changes
  • Identify and assess trends in the insurance industry and recommend actions
  • Develop high-frequency reporting on key operational objectives against relevant benchmarks
  • Build local (state-specific and intra-state) information sets on insurance environment, competitive environment/dynamics, and how Root is positioned
  • Drive enhancements to our pricing, product and UW based on state specific information such as legal environment, competitive landscape, and shopping behavior
  • Build rating elements/plans internally of competitors, driving both pricing decisions and unlocking new pricing segmentations.

What we're looking for

• • 6+ years in a Competitive Intelligence role in P&C insurance, strong preference of personal auto intelligence
  • Experience with S&P Market Intelligence tools, Verisk/ISO data, InsurQuote, or other industry databases and tools
  • Experience pulling and merging competitor data into internal databases
  • Strong understanding of insurance economics
  • Strong, demonstrable experience with SQL & proficiency with R
  • Experience with building and monitoring dashboards
  • Basic statistical knowledge
