The Manager, Data Architecture at VillageMD takes ownership of our leading-edge data platform services, designing relational, schemaless, and graph-based data models to enhance our organizational capability to make great products. These products aggregate, process, and make rich datasets available to provide vital insights that allow for informed, contextualized decision-making, driving every aspect of our business. The goal is to improve healthcare outcomes through the design, build, and enhancement of VillageMD’s data products. We're in a unique position to impact primary care across the continuum from independent, family owned practices to world class health systems. 

What are examples of work that the Manager, Data Architecture does at VillageMD? 

  • Own all data orchestration components including Airflow and enterprise messaging service
  • Own the development of test data and environments for platform application development
  • API/SDK Development
  • Invest in extensive research to understand product space and technologies to the point that you can go toe to toe with data architects
  • Research and synthesize multiple data models to create a universal view of clinical information across many EMRs (or translatable data experience in another industry)
  • Analyze stored procedures, stats and queries to figure out data access patterns
  • Collaborate with analytics and operations to create data views that enable predictive analytics training sets

What you might do in your first year?

  • Collaborate with Data Architects to develop rich, actionable models that enable data platform capabilities
  • Use data profiling tools to quickly assess the validity of data and information gained from various data sources
  • Prioritize additional data sources to add value to the data platform and it’s ability to service applications
  • Drive adoption of data platform services and capabilities across the organization
  • Discover meaningful data both internal and external to VillageMD to create new products
  • Identify key platform features, prioritize them and see them through completion (including adoption).
  • Contribute to the OHDSI ecosystem with a new data model
  • Transform an existing schemaless model into a relational OLTP model
  • Lead an implementation of an enterprise wide data ontology initiative
  • Implement a graph based model to enhance patient matching
  • Refactor a set of queries and views to increase performance and make data access logically approachable

The following experience is relevant to us:

  • 5-10 years of full-time experience
  • Expert level engineering skills in SQL and at least one other database language (Cassandra, Columnar, OLAP, etc) is required
  • Strong knowledge of relational databases and data modelling (MSSQL and Postgres)
  • Familiarity with alternative data storage technologies (S3, MongoDb, Redis, Neo4j)
  • Healthcare experience is helpful but by no means essential
  • Recent experience in backend software engineering or data science
  • Programming experience in Java or Python
  • Recent experience writing sophisticated code 25-50%+ of your working day
  • Technical ownership (or co-ownership) of a data platform
  • Experience managing multi-tenant data models
  • Experience with Test Data and Test Environments
  • Deep familiarity with Open Source technologies
  • Experience various data modelling approaches (eg stars schema, Type 2, snapshots, schemaless)
  • Experience using schema migration technologies (Alembic, Rails Migrations, etc.)
  • Experience with noSQL databases (Elastic search, MongoDB, Hadoop, Cassandra, Redis) is a plus
  • BS or MS in an analytical discipline: management information systems, engineering, science, finance, economics
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a proven ability to convey complex technical details in meaningful business context 
  • Track record of effective communication across various disciplines
