Collective Health is seeking a Manager of Data Engineering who will manage a team of skilled engineers that build big data pipelines and services using distributed computing tools, such as Spark, AWS Glue, Flink, Druid or Hadoop. These data pipelines are used to power experimentation, machine learning models, dashboards and custom reporting across a variety of critical domains, including plan utilization and value, care recommendations, benefit utilization, cost visibility and comparison, and health outcome analysis. You will also help drive data to inform product decisions and help our members discover the best way to get, manage and understand the value of their healthcare.

You will work with a multi-functional team of product engineers, data scientists, analysts and business partners to help grow Collective Health. The data your team produces will be used to help make business decisions and product strategy.

Specific responsibilities

  • Gain a deep understanding of our current technical and data capabilities, including the processes by which we operate the business.
  • Quickly understand areas for investment in order to support operational and business scale.
  • Collaborate with data partners to define a data engineering roadmap and support specific partner data requirements
  • Influence product and technology roadmaps by driving collaboration between your teams, other engineering functions, and cross organizationally.
  • Develop programs to enable and empower product and service teams to drive their own data pipelines while adhering to our data governance standard methodologies
  • Work closely with the data infrastructure team to ensure roadmaps and requirements are understood and the platform capabilities can support the data engineering backlog and goals
  • Ensure reporting, analytics and data science teams have the data products, developed by data engineering or themselves, to support the business goals
  • Participate in improving our engineering processes and governance.
  • Participate in data governance to scale our overall data operations
  • Work across functional and platform teams to ensure we are using technology and standards to enable agility and velocity of development.
  • Be a change agent and work diligently to ensure the “why” of decision making, technical decisions, and product decisions are understood.
  • Always strive for consistency in our approach to data to ensure quality and consistent reporting and data from across our various application, reporting and analytics teams
  • Hold yourself and your team accountable to delivering on commitments.
  • Lead and mentor other team members.
  • Identify and drive process improvements.
  • Facilitate communication with multi-functional groups.

Experience

  • 10+ years in engineering and 2+ years leading a team
  • Solid grounding in at least 2 languages: 1 JVM based (ie. Java, Scala, Kotlin), Python, as well as deep experience with SQL.
  • Experience with computer engines: SQL engine, Spark based (Databricks, Spark, Glue); experience with Flink or Druid or Hadoop based technology a plus.
  • Experience using cloud services and tools in AWS or at least 1 public cloud.
  • Experience leading data migrations
  • Experience optimizing data design and transforms with existing data sets.
  • Experience driving technical ideas and communicating clearly with technical as well as non-technical audiences
  • Experience as the technical lead or architect, organizing and mentoring junior and intermediate level developers, managers and architects.
  • BS in Computer Science, Engineering, Analytics, Mathematics or related degree. MS preferred.
  • Understanding of the healthcare industry and the capabilities required to support plan design and management, open enrollment, eligibility, claims and payments is a plus
