Position Overview:

 

The Principal Database Administrator leads major efforts in establishing best RDBMS, Cloud, Relational and Non-Relational database management systems, contributes to the design and management of Echo’s large scale database systems while supporting the strategic architectural vision of quality, scalability, performance and function.  

 

Essential Position Functions 

 

Accountability | Technical Planning 

  • Accountable for Leading and completing projects from beginning to the end with help from fellow Technical Data Architects 

  • Contribute to design and development of extensible/sustainable/quality database solutions based on an understanding of business and customer requirements and needs 

  • Contributes to technical design including high-level conceptual diagrams, data flow diagrams, component diagrams. 

  • Continuous strive to protect production (RDBMS, NoSQL, Cloud RDBMS) systems 

  • Commands a broad awareness of related projects  

 

Principal Accountability | Database Administration 

  • Proactively involved in Technical Leadership team 

  • Proactively monitors database trends and acts to improve database systems and processes 

  • Identifies and owns database related risks and raises/resolves issues effectively 

  • Provides recommendations for and analysis and evaluation of systems improvements, optimization, development and/or maintenance efforts including, but not limited to capacity planning 

  • Develops ad-hoc scripts, including clean-up scripts when needed 

  • Identifies and correct performance bottlenecks related to Database Operations. 

  • Supports and is accountable for timely production releases and adherence to release activities  

  • Contributes to development Disaster Recovery plans and data retention strategy 

 

Principal Accountability | Database Operations 

  • Provides recommendations for and analysis and evaluation of systems improvements, optimization, development and/or maintenance efforts including, but not limited to capacity planning 

  • Identifies and correct performance bottlenecks related to SQL code. 

  • Contributes to selection and design of tools required for management of the database and transaction processing environments

Position Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent years of experience 

  • 7 to 10 years managing commercial-grade database systems leveraging the following: 

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008, 2012 and 2014 (2016 a plus) 

  • Strong T-SQL skills 

  • MS SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)  

  • Adept at Transactional Replication, including setup, troubleshooting and creating replication scripts 

  • Expert performance troubleshooting skills 

  • Strong understanding of Clustering , Always-On, Partitioning, SAN technologies 

  • Able to implement Disaster Recovery methods 

  • Preferred cloud skills: AWS, Redshift, S3, Lambda, Kinesis Streaming. 

  • 3rd Party monitoring tools, including Idera SQLDM, Solar Winds Ignite, SCOM, and others 

  • 24/7 Support 

 

  • Proven track record (7 to 10 years) working in fast-paced, time-sensitive project that requires: 

  • Clear and timely communication of key information deemed critical to project success 

  • Managing design risk 

  • Balancing priorities 

  • Going above and beyond the requirement of the role 

  • Articulating technical information to a non-technical audience 

  • Understanding of Scrum/Agile methodologies is preferred 

  • Leading without authority

Work environment/physical demands summary:

This job operates in an office environment and uses a computer, telephone and other

office equipment as needed to perform duties. The noise level in the work environment is typical of

that of an office with an open seating floor plan. The employee may encounter frequent interruptions throughout the work day. The employee is regularly required to sit, talk, or hear.
