SUMMARY - SR. CONSULTANT, DATA GOVERNANCE

Northern Trust Asset Management (NTAM) is an over a trillion dollar investment management firm entrusted by investors around the globe to help them navigate changing market environments, so they can confidently realize their long-term objectives.

NTAM has embarked on an ambitious plan to modernize its data and analytics capabilities and embed a data-driven culture throughout the organization. This role will act as an interface between business and IT to establish policies, standards, and processes that will be developed and maintained to support the Asset Management Data Governance function. This individual will develop standardized methodologies for implementation, change management and define best practices and standards to operationalize and govern Asset Management Data Assets, ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements impacting Asset Management (from data perspective), and ensure Asset Management complies with all NT Data, Data Governance and Data Management Standards and Procedures and other rules, laws , controls and requirements. The ideal candidate will display an exemplary level of personal interaction skills and will be leading partners from all company business units leveraging strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Partner with key business unit leaders, IT partners and other stakeholders to develop and deliver business critical data governance platforms and solutions.
  • Implement BAU data governance activities such as metadata management, CDE identification, business glossary development, data quality management, reference data management and related reporting etc.
  • Participate in Data projects in the organization. Work in an Agile methodology with sprint planning and delivering to maximize business impact.
  • Work with internal systems for data or with external data vendors for integrating data into a common NTAM platform. Facilitate the integration between IT and data vendors for a smooth delivery.
  • Lead the problems and issues resolution of operational processes with out-of-the-box thinking and continuous improvement of services.
  • Maintain a culture of collaboration. Partner with Information Architecture team for evaluation and selection of fit-for-purpose data tools.
  • Work with Data Governance team to implement an effective data governance model across various domains for data stewardship. Implement data tools or build in-house as needed for this to be successful.
  • Ensure Data Governance processes are clearly defined, documented and escalation path exists for rapid issue resolution.
  • Resolve conflicting priorities among data owners, data consumers and custodians Ownership, elicitation and documentation of business data needs and business requirements; documenting standard operating procedures, data flows, and process flows for the organization to reference.
  • Define Data Governance and Data Management Training Approach. Identify training and development needs. Create high-quality, relevant training materials and effectively deliver training content to data professionals and other Asset partners. Establish scorecards and dashboards with process performance metrics, targets and triggers.
  • Communicate action plans, status and priorities to appropriate partners.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Strong presentation and communication skills. Understand and be capable of effectively communicating the role of Data Governance to both business and technical communities.
  • Solid understanding of Data Governance and how it can be applied to Data and Analytics. Good understanding of Data Quality and Data Management practices. Experience with data management and governance platforms (Collibra, Alation, IBM IGC etc.)
  • Knowledge of Data Governance, Data Quality and Enterprise Data Management concepts (DAMA).
  • Must have proven program management skills and a strategic mindset. Should be able to drive change in an organization.
  • Understanding of the asset management business domains with the ability to determine the primary use cases for Data and Analytics.
  • Experience with distributed data and analytics platforms in cloud and hybrid environments. Also an understanding of a variety of data access and analytic approaches.
  • SQL or Python proficiency preferred.
  • Strong persuasion skills, including the ability to create marketing and messaging materials that meet stakeholder needs.

NECESSARY EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

  • 5-7 years of experience in data governance, management and quality for large organizations
  • Experience in asset management/investment management is highly desired.
  • Bachelors degree in field like Computer Science, Information technology, Math, Data Science, Engineering, Statistics, Finance (with focus on analysis) etc. and/or relevant proven work experience is required

  • Be an excellent communicator and collaborator, engaging with multiple technical and business stakeholders and leaders. Team player with collaborative and inclusive approach.
  • Ability to understand the long-term ("big picture") and short-term perspectives of situations. Be able to translate the requirements into functional deliverables and have the ability to create interim solutions in a longer roadmap
  • Organizationally savvy, with a good understanding of the enterprise's political climate and how to navigate, influence and persuade political waters.
  • Ability to communicate, influence and persuade peers and leadership.
