Upwork ($UPWK) is the world’s work marketplace. We help connect companies large and small with top independent talent from around the world. Simply put, our mission is to create economic opportunities so people have better lives.

Every year, more than $2 billion of work is done through Upwork by skilled independent professionals who want the freedom of working anytime, anywhere.

The Trust & Safety team seeks to deliver the trustworthy, safe, and inclusive work marketplace that sparks a global movement to reimagine work! As our Senior Product Manager responsible for risk detection, you’ll help shape how we protect the work marketplace of the future. You'll steer how we identify violations, fraud, and abuse, using rules-based reports, data science models, and vendor integrations. You'll work closely with investigators, analysts, and intelligence analysts to target malicious users carefully while avoiding impact to good users.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Build a prioritized roadmap to target violations for proactive enforcement, and help define the strategic vision for the underlying infrastructure for detection systems.
  • Deep dive into many different types of policy violations, including scams, spam, credit card fraud, money laundering, malware, and many others, to build a deep understanding of potential features and signals.
  • Collaborate with Detection Engineering in a fail-fast model, working to ideate, test hypotheses, and build and launch new reports and models.
  • Deliver measurable results to protect our customers from fraud and abuse on Upwork.

What it takes to catch our eye:

  • Prior experience as a product manager, in defense cyberspace operations, in a technical capacity within trust & safety, or in fraud detection.
  • Fluency with practical statistics, malware and cybersecurity, and data science and analytics techniques. This technical experience will help you assess tradeoffs between different targeting approaches.
  • Insatiable curiosity and an eye for anomaly detection.
  • Creativity and a desire to try out of the box solutions - and comfort abandoning those approaches quickly if they don't work.
  • An ability to transition seamlessly between highly quantitative areas and areas with no data and limited known information.
  • Flexibility to adapt to constantly evolving goals and priorities
