JOB DESCRIPTION:

Become NORC at the University of Chicago’s newest system architect in our Infrastructure, Security, and Operations team. As a member of the Advanced Data Solutions (ADS) Engineering team, provide strategic infrastructure engineering and solutions designing for ADS’ clients.

Take responsibility for architecting infrastructure solutions that meet the requirements of ADS clients and help increase capacity to take on more work to better enable automated, repeatable processing on our technology centric projects. Leverage this opportunity to help evolve the existing solutions by developing cloud native functionality that improve system availability, performance, security, capacity, and functionality as you act as a subject matter expert both for your team, as well as other internal and external stakeholders.

Research Data Enclaves, Federal Data Strategy, Data Warehousing, Data Visualization, Business Intelligence, Governance, Data Security, Solution Engineering, Product Development to support the evolving business model of the ADS.
 

DEPARTMENT: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Solution Architecture: Responsible for all on-premise and cloud infrastructure that is designed to support the ADS. Ensure the solutions are delivered as per enterprise standards and following all security and compliance requirements, ensuring high availability and data redundancy/protection. • Understand and develop solutions for client needs, ranging from ETL, Data Warehousing, Remote access, and analytical applications support.
• Availability/Incident/Request Management: Responsible for managing the timely resolution of incidents, problems and request fulfillment provided by the technical operational team. Maintain ongoing review of assigned systems' performance, implement improvement and expansion strategies, and provide consultation in troubleshooting client issues.
• Change and Release Management: Coordinate, and manage system patching, upgrade, and maintenance tasks to ensure high availability of system resources. Applies sound IT production and change management methods to all areas of supported infrastructure. Adhere to set standards and processes when documenting, communicating and implementing changes.
• Technical Management: Design, configure, and support the technology platforms of NORC’s infrastructure. Take an active role in developing system specific standards, procedures, and guidelines for the production platforms. Build and maintain servers/services on physical and virtual platforms and cloud platforms.
• Priority Management: Must be able to manage several assignments at one time, balancing resources, priorities, deadlines and time. The work is highly technical and requires collaboration across multiple disciplines and groups. The candidate must demonstrate an ability to work independently and provide support over weekends and off-hours.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or other related field
  • At least ten years of professional experience supporting in a progressively senior technical role
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience with expertise related to systems analysis, engineering, and administration functions
  • Mature scripting and automation skills (Example: PowerShell; Python)
  • Experienced in developing hybrid cloud strategies and designing public and private clouds in a secure and compliant manner to deliver solutions (AWS and Azure).
  • Experienced in the installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and administration of server based applications and operating systems on Intel-based platforms
  • Knowledge of VSphere 6.5 and above, CentOS 7.6 and above, Windows Server 2012 and above, Active Directory, Exchange, HP and Dell server hardware
  • Familiarity with Citrix XenDesktop 7.6 and above
  • Familiarity supporting ETL workflows with large datasets
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, comfort level interacting with management, users, and other team members on a regular basis
  • Willingness to provide off-hours (including weekends) support for top priority issues
  • Experience working independently with minimal oversight, producing high-quality results
